Highlights Of 2011

DGandy05_V_21dec2011_PR_b.jpg

Here we are again - the end of another year.

Was it just me or did 2011 go quickly? Or am I just getting old? It's come around so quickly, I feel like I need a break for Christmas this year so I'm off to the sunshine and on Christmas day I will hopefully be enjoying the sun and being used as a climbing frame (I have my uses), by my little nephews and niece in the Gandy family pool.

In what can only be described as an action-packed but truly wonderful year, I thought I would go over and review what made my year so rather special.

The London Marathon
To accomplish something I said I never would is quite special. I'm not sure how I actually agreed in the first place. But Rankin's wife, Tuuli, is very persuasive and she really rubbed it in when she overtook me at 22 miles. I knew it was going to be a huge challenge and probably a painful one. Well I certainly got the pain part, 26 miles of it, with the worse case of cramp I've ever seen and lost five toe nails. Will I be doing it again? Of course!

Being named one of the most influential people in London
This was a complete surprise and an honour. To be included among the names that had been chosen by ES Magazine may not seem much to some people, but for a guy who came into the fashion industry and didn't know his belt from his brogue, I felt rather satisfied (for about a day anyway, you know what I'm like!).

Editing ES Magazine
Editing the men's issue of ES Magazine took up more time than I could have ever anticipated. My respect for editors has gone up tenfold since working on this project. I'm very proud of the results though and I'm glad I got to introduce some very talented people, not only to work on that issue but to also appear in the magazine. To have this influence makes all the hard work, sleepless nights and travelling very worthwhile.

Cover of Attitude/Cover of Details
The cover of Attitude was probably my favourite ever cover, but I knew that would probably be the case when I asked Marianno Vivannco to shoot it. He is an amazing photographer. The cover of Details magazine was a highlight for two reasons. Firstly, because the cover is usually just for heavy-hitters such as Hollywood actors. Secondly, I was asked to appear on the cover with a group of other male models many months back and we said no. People told me I was crazy and I would never get the cover on my own. Can I be smug for just two mins? Hee hee.

Launch of the David Gandy book and launch day in Milan
This was probably one the best and strangest days of my life. I look back and think "did that really happen?" I look at the book now on my bookshelf, among other books dedicated to JFK, Paul Newman, James Dean and it's all a little surreal. All can do is thank Dolce and Gabbana and the wonderful six years we have worked together. Will there be another book in ten years?

Nissan GTR Drive

So everyone by now knows my passion of cars. Well there is one car I have been wanting to drive for years and I purposely left it until this week for a little Christmas treat for myself. It's not a Ferrari or Aston or classic Jaguar - it's a Nissan. Yes a Nissan. It's called a GTR and is pretty much known for being the quickest car on the road. People who see it won't understand, but any car enthusiast and engineer will appreciate what this car is and stands for. One word - astonishing.

Contract with Marks and Spencer

After ten years in modelling, and pushing how underrated and influential the British are in fashion and modelling, it was wonderful it all got recognised by Marks and Spencer. It was wonderful to work with such a British institution and I can't wait to continue this in 2012.

Becoming Battersea ambassador
Becoming the ambassador for Battersea Dogs and Cats home is wonderful. But really it's nothing to what all the volunteers and workers at Battersea do on a daily basis, so any way I can help, I will. Many of them have to work over Christmas keeping all those dogs and cats fed, clean and warm and of course given the attention they deserve. I can't wait to work with this amazing charity more next year.

Conversation with Richard James
Last week at the GQ Christmas Lunch I had the honour of speaking with Richard James. Richard is so wonderful and humble, considering what he has achieved, that I relish it when I get to speak to him. We (as always), got on to the subject of men's fashion and both agreed that men's dress sense is getting a lot better, that the dressing down idea is slowing moving out of the way and men are starting to look at tailoring and suits again. The astonishing part was that Richard said this had a lot to do with me and the example I lead and of course the Style App. This, coming from Richard James, may have been the best conversation of 2011.

Question Time:

What is it that you like to do on a lazy Sunday afternoon (if you have any)??!!
One person once said to me, "You're the only person I know who ever comes back from holiday looking leaner and fitter." That's because I can never sit still and when I do have a break this means I can run and go to the gym which is relaxing to me. So a lazy Sunday afternoon will contain some exercise, a definite read of the papers and usually my real treat is a drive. I still cannot sleep knowing I have a car to test for GQ at the weekends.

Are you running the 2012 London Marathon?
I'm giving my body a rest this year. But a trek through Africa or India is on the cards.

Have you read the Fever series by Karen Marie Moning? A movie is slated for 2013, if you would be interested.
Many people have talked to me about this in the comments section of VOGUE.COM and on Facebook. I'm not aware of the books, but it is certainly something I will look into, so thank you for making me aware.

Do you have to watch what you eat? How do you get over cravings?
First thing is, I do not let eating healthily rule my life. Not only would this make me unhappy but also the people around me. I do eat healthily yes, but have been for over 12 years now, so this is my life. It isn't a diet, it is a lifestyle. But I still drink alcohol; eat cakes and plenty of carbs, but of course all in moderation. My one tip is stay away from all processed food and fast food. As for cravings I always believe if you have unhealthy food in the fridge and cupboard you will eat it, so it's very simple - don't buy it. I always have something prepared for me to snack on, cooked or roasted chicken or turkey, or hummus and vegetables. If something is prepared and easy you will go for this over junk food.

What do you want for Christmas?
As I always seem to be away working and in restaurants or room service and when I get home I do all the cooking, all I would like is for someone to cook for me really. Fingers crossed Mother Gandy is reading this.
So that's it for 2011. Thank you for all your support and comments throughout the year. I will be back in 2012 to bore you all to tears as usual. So as a great man says, who pulls off a red outfit like no other man I know, "Merry Christmas to one and to all, a good night."

Who is the female model? Is it Isabeli Fontana? Oh how I would love to see a campaign with both of them!

^ Chloe Pridham, I believe. She was so much more beautiful than that new girl he's with. :ninja:

Edit: Too late. haha But she does look like Isabeli from some angles.
