Interested in how you would all define the inherent style of each of the fashion cities...and whether they match the following stereotypes:

City Style

New York Slick, uptight & sophisticated

London Downbeat & street with a traditional slant

Milan Sexy, body concious & lux-ed up

Paris Creative, chic and superiour to the rest

Tokyo Avant garde, energetic and cutesey

Please let me know what you think about these stereotypes (and and reasons why you think these cities have the styles they do if you can be bothered). Its very interesting I think.

Can I add one more?

Berlin Artistic, Conceptual, Uber-Cool, Modern and Forward-Looking

I'll add one more:

Hong Kong: trendy, streetwise, but overtly uniform.

New York: Classic, Lacking in color (not my definition, but an addition to the stereotype listed above)

Any city in Scotand: sh*t

It's really hard to define New York. There is too much. How do you define it? New Jesey girls with LV bags and Juicy suits in Soho on a weekend? The calculatingly scruffy proletarian rich hipsters shuttling between Williamsburg and Union Square? The head-to-toe trend whores that moved from the Midwest to New York a year ago desperately trying to fit in? The old and tired club jacket skeletons of the Upper East Side? The Boston WASP-descendend transplants in their stupid Harvard/Princeton sweatshirts? The wannabe rappers who refuse to pull up their pants? How do you put all of that in one sentence?

^ You can't. I loved your description, though. I think that's the thing... you can't put all of it into one sentence, or a few short and sweet words... that's why "stereotypes" are what they are, mere generalizations.

helena....
are you talking about the street style of the people who live in the cities...
or th etypes of clothes that you see on the runways?...

because why is this in designers and collections unless helena is referring to the collections and shows in each city...right?...

**ps-
i don't think you can really say that...
because it's a mixed bag in every city...
and the designers who show in each city are from all over the world...
ie-paris has belgians, japanese, greek, british, americans, israeli, etc...
which may be the biggest reason for the 'superiority' of paris...
simply the DIVERSITY...

**i do think you can separate the markets by american, asian, european...etc...
i think that the market that they cater to is more relevant than the city that they show in...

^ i did mean the collections shown...thats why i chose those cities! .....but there is a reason say someone from greece shows in london rather than paris...or new york.

why is burberry shown in milan...and luella in NYC?

i don't know the exact reason behind each individual designers choice...
but it is usually a simple business decision...

either a designer wants to be around other great designers...
or designers who do similar work...

OR..

they choose the opposite route and try to go sompelace where they think they will stand out...ie- mcqueen showing in ny the first time

hardly anyone shows in london because hardly any buyers/editors go to london...
so that's purely a business decision as well...

so i will try to define the runways...

paris-glamour, fantasy
nyc-practical, reality
milan-luxury, fabrics
london-quirky, offbeat
tokyo-street, playful

*helena-maybe you want to change the title to the 'runway' style...?

Glasgow is derelict, but edgy and so much character!

Actually, I've never met a city I haven't liked. I love how each has a distinct character. They are more interesting than people. And I'm really hard to please.

^^^ not sure Glasgow is edgy zazie....? character, yes, but not really edgy. why do you think that?

It's the music and the clubbing scene. I went to see Mogwai there once a long time ago, was it at Asylum? Besides, my little brother went to school there, and he called home crying because he was intimidated..heehheh.

that's funny. i'm from glasgow, and I spose it it can a bit imtimidating. Glasgow's always had a thriving music scene, but fashion-wise it's a dud, and irritatingly thinks it's not. It's latest city motto is "Scotland....with Style". In reality all it has is a penchant for glam and therefore big name designers such as Armani, Versace etc. It's a class thing I think - there's no doubt that it's historically (and still in many was is) a poor place, and when people there can move away from that they're certainly not going to remain quiet about it. So the demonstrate their wealth.

Yes, it is derelict insome parts, but that's where the music and art scene lurks. It has a lot of night energy, and its character is definitely punk. That's what I really like about it. It's also very much in character to b*tch about the city...B)

My little brother was an exchange student with yuppie aspirations who wore Armani glasses, so I think he met some people who were rude to him, heh...he moved to Edinburgh.

runways in india: mindless crap. people, and even designers here know absolutely nothing about fashion, its quite pathetic.
