Is she making a comeback? She definitely has one of the most original face in fashion ever, it's a pity she's short.

Devon Aoki: The model turned monster-slayer aims high

Lauded for her diminutive, doll-like appearance, model-cum-actress Devon Aoki shot to fame as Karl Lagerfeld's muse and as the face of Versace.

So just how did she transform herself into a muscular martial-arts action heroine, asks Jane Gordon?

It is difficult to work out how someone as petite, pretty and polite as Devon Aoki has become – through roles in films such as Sin City and 2 Fast 2 Furious – the queen of action-adventure films.
But somehow, the 25-year-old American model-cum-actress (of Japanese and German extraction) has carved a niche for herself as the girl most likely to triumph in the face of fearful adversity (often involving mutants, martial arts and very fast cars).

We meet shortly after Devon has finished shooting a role in Mutant Chronicles (due for release next year, and also starring John Malkovich) at Shepperton Studios, and the strain of battling hordes of special-effects monsters has had an impact on her body, which is now rather more muscular than it was in her modelling days.
"I play a soldier and I had to beef up for the role so I could be just a little bit convincing.
"It's a really interesting film by Simon Hunter, a young British director, and it has an apocalyptic theme.
"It's futuristic but retro at the same time, with a 1940s feel,' she says, as she raises an arm to reveal the slight bulge of a biceps.
"The making of the film offered Devon the perfect excuse to catch up with friends and family in London – a city that was home to her throughout her teens and until she was 21.
"It was really nice to be able to spend almost three months in Britain.
"I lived in London for eight years and I like to say that I am two parts American and one part British because I lived there for a third of my life.
"The city had a big impact on me because I went to school there and it was also where I established my modelling career."
Devon was originally spotted at a concert in New York when she was 13, but it was Kate Moss, who saw her picture in an American magazine, who brought her to the attention of her agent Sarah Doukas, who then signed Devon to her Storm agency when she was 14.
With her distinctive look and her petite frame, she was seen as a potential rival to Kate.
Though never achieving, as a model, the household-name fame of Kate, Devon was hugely successful, becoming Karl Lagerfeld's muse at 16 and replacing Naomi Campbell as the face of Versace.
Eleven years on, having moved seamlessly from modelling to acting, Devon has enormous affection for Kate.
"I have a lot of love for her. I hate all the bad publicity she has had over the past year, because she is a wonderful person – she is a true icon," she says.
Devon's family background involves at least nine siblings in an extended family that even she finds difficult to explain.
One of three children of Pamela Hilburger, a German-American artist, and Japanese-born Rocky Aoki, the founder of the international restaurant chain Benihana, Devon and her brother and sister, Kyle and Echo, grew up in a privileged world, living between Malibu and New York City.
Her parents split when Devon was nine; her mother remarried and her father is with wife number three. Devon is not entirely sure how many half-siblings she has: "I have so many it's hard to keep track of them," she says.
It's no wonder Devon is so hazy on the family tree – her playboy father once admitted that he had 'three kids from three different women at exactly the same time'.
One half-brother, though, is Steve Aoki – aka DJ Millionaire and founder of the Dim Mak record label – and Devon does comment that all her siblings get on.
"It's nice to have an extended family, even if we are often in different countries," she says.
The complications within the Aoki family are such that last year her father sued four of his children for an alleged attempt to take control of the companies he founded (estimated to be worth between $60 million and $100 million).
Devon, though, is exempt from any family rows because she is not involved in the family business and because, in her father's words, she is his 'favourite' and 'very smart' and he is proud of her success.
Indeed, Rocky – whose favourite phrase is 'money is not everything, just 99 per cent' – insists that, of all his children, she is the most like him.
He has described how, as a little girl, she would leave money strewn in her room, telling him, "I want to see my money, Daddy.
"I want to see it when I'm in bed, when I'm in the bathroom, everywhere.'
Devon, understandably, will not be drawn on the family problems and will make no comment about her father – nor his comments about her.
It's certainly true that Devon had a precocious talent for earning money, but she was never, she says with a smile, particularly materialistic.
She loves jewellery (her mother used to design it) and is thrilled to be a spokesperson for Chopard (who supplied the dramatic necklace that Devon wore at Cannes in May, see page 26), but she sees herself more as an artist than as the money-obsessed girl her father observed.
As a teenage model she was, as reports at the time confirm, remarkably unspoilt; more interested in writing poetry (which she still does), playing the drums (which she doesn't) and hanging out with her two pet snakes than behaving like the It-girl she could have been.
"The snakes were called Kidney and Snake; they're in London now with my brother.
"These days, I prefer fluffy animals – I have two adorable schnauzers called Fatty and Kitty who live with me in California," she says.
Devon laughs when I suggest that, perhaps, as a teenager, she was something of a goth, but she concedes that her unusual looks often resulted in her being portrayed as a 'freak' by stylists, and have doubtless played a part in her evolution as an action-adventure actress.
Dressed today in a T-shirt and a pair of Chloé jeans, Devon somehow looks other-worldly, which probably goes a little way to explain how she came to be cast in roles such as Princess Kasumi in Dead or Alive and the deadly little Miho in the critically acclaimed Sin City (she is signed to work on the sequel, Sin City 2, later this year).
In War (due for release on 28 September), she co-stars with Jet Li and Jason Statham in yet another film with a martial-arts theme, but she is philosophical about the dangers of being typecast, believing that as her roles get larger she will be able to broaden her acting scope.
An A-grade student at school, Devon chose not to go on to university, believing that working and travelling offered her a 'broader and deeper education' than a degree.
"I decided to take the opportunities that came my way rather than continue my studies, but I am always trying to increase my knowledge.
"I would definitely like to develop my writing – poetry is one of my greatest passions," she says.
Devon is as cautious of talking about her love life as she is about her family.
Her name was linked with singer Lenny Kravitz when she was 18, and more recently she has been happily single.
The smile on her face today is, she admits, linked to a burgeoning romance with a new man (she won't reveal his name, saying only that he works in the film industry but is not an actor).
"This is a guy who is really intelligent, super cute, and it's very exciting.
"I don't want to say who he is, but I really feel like this could be love," she says with a shy, nervous laugh. "It's all happening!"

Does anyone know what her natural hair color is? I saw those baby pics of her and her hair was red, so is it naturally light or does she dye it that way?
