Interview for Fashion Week Daily
Devon Aoki is a triple threat. The model, actress, and now designer is as talented as she is beautiful. This summer, she stars in the movie
War with
Jet Li and
Jason Statham and is launching her denim collaboration with Levi’s in Japan. Aoki chatted with
Chic Report about being the Chanel bride, using a katana sword, and her little sister.
What have you been up to this summer?
This summer I have unfortunately been working and I haven’t had any vacation time yet, but I think I’m going to Italy in October for a week to relax and not worry about work.
We’re going to travel all over the country and try to see as much as we can. I want to stay in great eclectic boutique hotels and see art and history and really experience Italy. I’m excited because I have only gone there for work, when there’s no time for the touristy things.
Do you prefer being on film or on the runway?
Right now I’m really having a great time doing film projects and it has been amazing. Working on
War was great. It was a fun, high adrenaline action thriller, which we shot in Canada. You go on a movie shoot and you are there for two or three months as opposed to being on a fashion shoot for a day or two. Your film family becomes like your second family. But I just shot the Hugo Boss ads. Three days of shooting with Peter Lindbergh reminded me how much I love modeling. I really can’t complain. I have the best of both worlds.
What was your favorite show of all time?
Being the bride in the Chanel show was really amazing. I did that like five times and every season I had a different wedding gown and it gives you an idea of what you want your wedding dress to look like.
Any up-and-coming models you’re keeping your eye on?
My little sister Elliot Paige Price is starting to model. I just did a story with her for French Vogue over the summer. We shot it together in Newport Beach. It’s the second shoot I’ve done with her–I did a DKNY ad with her as well. She’s in school but she’s an unbelievably multitalented 13-year-old and an amazing pianist. I definitely think she’s one to watch. It’s trippy because we look a lot alike but she’s a redhead.
You have done a lot of action movies–what’s your karate rank?
I have a black belt but I don’t know if it means that much because I think if someone came up to me on the street and tried to fight me I would run in the other direction and cower. I’m a scaredy-cat cry baby. My film persona is so different. I’m great with a katana sword so that helps, but who carries around a katana? My 100 lbs. of muscle isn’t that much. I’m subject to the laws of physics.
Do you do your own stunts?
It’s great doing your own stunts because you get a lot of credit. People think I’m badass and could clear a room if I wanted to. I take out my arsenal of weapons and people back away. I’ve run up a huge tree and done a big back flip off of it. It’s really fun and of course the bruises are not so fun but worth it in the end. What’s even more fun is watching my mom try to do some moves. She came out when I was shooting
Sin City and there was my mom in the hotel room, clunking around with a katana sword. If you put my mom and me in a ring she would have the best of me. She grew up with five brothers.
Where are you living now?
I just bought a house in L.A. I’m back and forth a lot, especially to Europe. I’m tired of getting on planes and wish there was some other way to get around.
Favorite place in the world?
I love Maui. It’s so beautiful. I grew up swimming and I was on the swim team and I love spending hours and hours in the ocean snorkeling and scuba diving. You forget about everything else when you’re in the water and when you get out you discover you were floating around for four or five hours. I love Paris too. I’m a hopeless romantic. I love being lost in the city with art, history, and culture.
Are you designing at all?
I have my jeans line launching in Asia right now. I collaborate on a line with Levi’s so I am going out there for my store opening and to promote the line. It’s been a long time coming. One of the coolest designs is an adjustable zip waist you can tighten with an elegant clasp closure. I’ll go to a Spanish restaurant and eat rice and plantains and need to open the top button of my jeans. So now the waist can adjust. Plus, they’re cool looking.
