Casting directors, pull those composite cards out from under your desk and find that one called Dion! Australian Dion Carnell is about to embark on a new adventure... we spoke to him to get the low-down.
How did you begin modeling?
I began in Perth, Australia, by entering the
Vivien’s ‘Search for a new face’ competition run by Christine Fox. My friends all entered so I did too. I was only a runner up but I got accepted into Vivien’s.
Who won the competition?
The winning girl was Sonya Kukainis, who is very up and coming.
Did you enter as a joke or because you really believed you could do it?
I entered because I was quitting college. I was looking to do something similar and saw the advert so I entered. I was just 16 at the time. My mum used to be a model and has always spoken about her experiences. We also have some family friends who run the Brisbane branch of Vivien’s so that’s how I knew a bit about the industry already.
What were you doing at college?
I was dancing, which I’d been doing since I was 3 or 4. I was studying at university level whilst doing normal school studies. It was a whole range of dance; ballet, jazz, tap, singing and acting, a bit of everything.
Why did you decide to quit?
Basically, it was because it was taking its toll on my body, my knees were getting really bad and that’s not good for a 16-year-old boy.
Where were you living at the time?
This was when I was in Perth; however, I grew up on the other side of Australia in Queensland. Perth doesn’t have a huge market but it has it’s fair share of shows and department stores.
What was the first job you did?
I did some castings for a while then I did a show for David Jones (a department store in Australia), then Mercedes Fashion Week followed by Perth Fashion Festival. After that I moved to Singapore for a while doing editorial and shows before moving to Sydney.
How did you find travelling alone while you were still so young?
I lived half on my own while I was in grade 10 and 11 because my parents travel a lot for work, so it wasn’t a problem. I’m glad I had the opportunity to travel outside Australia.
How was modelling in Singapore?
It was a ball, a nice entry to the modelling world. It wasn’t as busy as London or Sydney but still kept you on your feet. After Sydney I went straight to London and am now going between there and Paris.
How would you describe your look?
Wow, that’s a hard question! I would say that I’m not the sort of “ocker” [manly, muscled type] Australian that you find in Brisbane or Perth. I’d say I have a younger, softer look. Sydney has the market for my kind of look.
How do the Aussies compare to people in other countries?
Everyone is so laid back, much more laid back than other countries. I personally think it’s a better atmosphere to work in, people are less stressed.
If you could associate yourself with a brand, what would it be?
I guess something quite clean cut and sophisticated like Gucci, Louis Vuitton or Calvin Klein. I love that high fashion look.
What is the best job you’ve done so far?
I did a project with [photographer] Justin Smith and Mark Vassalo [editor of
Follow Magazine]. It’s a real visual feast, a collaboration between the photographer and stylist.
After this season you plan to return to Australia, what’s going on?
I’m going back to Australia to start university. I will be doing commerce and majoring in marketing. I’ve been modelling for 2 years now and I’m really looking forward to studying.
I have this place at uni so I need to go otherwise getting in again could be a real problem. I start in February so time is running out.
Are you looking forward to your first show season?
It should be good. I’m a bit nervous about Milan because I’ve never been Paris is fine though because I have loads of mates there. We’ll have to wait and see what happens!
