Do catwalks influence your opinion of brands?

Yes, how a designer presents the clothes says a lot I think.

I think i follow most brands because of their catwalk shows

Yes it does. Catwalks are not only about the clothes, but about the space, the energy, the music, etc. You can tell when a designer has put some serious thought and time into a show...it shows!

I think that presentation is everything. It can make or break the collection.

TOTALLY!

In the Runway Show the Designer ultimatly communicates his/her idea behind the Collection, the Runway Show presents the Outfits "in their essence".

The Gucci F/W 03/04 Show TOTALLY hit my nerve - it totally reflected how I feel & how I`d like to communicate that over my appearance!
I`m an absolute Gucci addict since then! ^_^

Labels that totally fell from grace with their Runway Presentations are Jil Sander and Prada to me - it totally disgusts me that only boys that look like children are send down Jil Sanders Runway and Ms Prada ALWAYS manages to take away all glamour from her -often elegant- pieces.

The Runway Show is like a teaser - and the feeling of the Show & the feeling of the stores must go together! Gucci, YSL & Moschino do that successfull!
Prada, Jil Sander & Chanel show different worlds on the Runway and in the "store reality".

of coarse, the catwalk is part of how the designer expresses the image and vision.

Yes, completely. The styling and model selection tell you how the designer sees their clothes and how they think they should be worn (for better or for worse).

I don't mean completely literally (i.e. John Galliano, Christian Lacroix etc.) but great shows put the season's look into a more real context.

No..there rarely is a catwalk outfit that I'd wear from head to toe..that is if I could afford it..and I would imagine that it only on rare occassions would reflect my style.

Added: What does influence my opinion of a brand is how it is cut and the feel of the material ON ME..
Most of us don't have a seat at the catwalks..but only images from the catwalks..and paper/virtual images are such a "grateful" material..it doesn't really say all too much about the quality of the items or necessarily the brand itself... being that often what is shown are "show pieces".

in a way, i guess. the catwalk presentation is supposed to interpret the designer's vision and attitude for the label/season...but i tend to look at each piece individually instead of how it's styled on the runway, to determine if something i'd like would fit in with my already existing wardrobe and i think about how i myself would wear it...

yes and no...some designers I wear because I love their clothes, the construction, fit, etc. and if they do or don't have a runway show isn't going to affect me.

for other designers, it is all about the presentation: music, inspiration, mood, location (ie., dior, mcqueen, etc.), and so I'll follow those brands just because I want to see what they are going to do next.

Do you think there is a difference between the presentation of a menswear catwalk and a women's wear catwalk?

absolutely

most definitely. to elaborate on my earlier answer: to a varying degree, each brand uses runway as image vehicles to promote sales. you see runway and you see the undiluted designer look. there are houses, like marni, yohji yamamoto, or marc jacobs, who, although you may never ever buy a single piece of their clothing, put things together in such a new way, you begin to put your ensembles that way. and then there are brands like prada, chloe, or luella, who put on shows mainly to get you to fixate on that one key piece of the season. while, you won't see many people wearing a head-to-toe prada look, almost everyone can look at her enigmatic looks and find something that'll drive them to buy something. then it's up to the advertisements and editorials and that hard-to-get celebrity tie-in.

menswear shows and womenswear shows are geared to different audiences (obviously). while only the fashion-hungry client will probably even know about the menswear shows, the women's shows get lots of exposure in magazines and television. so many times (i think of d & g) the womenswear shows are more representative of what will trickle down into the stores.

The clothes themselves are much more important for me. The models/the way the show is presented/the venue/the music are all very secondary to me.

yes of coz, when you go shopping, you only see the seperated items, but catwalks...you see how they match the best way...
