Popular wisdom says that by watching the men's fashion shows that come first, you can understand what will be coming down the women's runways in advance.

I freely admit that I have never followed the men's shows closely, and maybe that's why this has never seemed true to me.

I've been looking at a few of the men's shows, and wondering about this ... could those of you who are expert on both please enlighten me? Is the popular wisdom true, and can you please illustrate your answer with pix from past men's/women's runways?

I'd have to agree with faust, the men's shows don't usually hint at the upcoming women's shows. If anything, I think it's the women's shows that influence the men's collections, for instance, the recent Milan shows saw a lot of very dark, romantic influences that recall the much beloved new gothic trend that was huge for the fall 2005 collections.

Even though there are some rare instances when a label's mens collection does seem to influence the next women's collection, I don't think it actually works that way. The one example that comes to mind is Gucci's s/s 2003 collections. Both had a strong Japanese influence in prints, colors and kimonos......now, I don't know which one influenced the other, but since womenswear is generally much more directional and ever-changing, and as a result much more influential, I'd guess that the womens collection influenced the mens collection.

Forgive me,I think I mis-interpreted the question.

But,no,of course not.

With DSquared, yes. The men's show is always the same theme as the the womens show, they even use the same runway. There is no point in even going to the womens show if you've already been to the men's show, it's always EXACTLY the same.

In most cases, no. However, more contemporary designers (Dsquared, D&G, Emporio Armani to some extent) do have significant similarities between the men's and women's collections.

Just my view.

Yeah I think it is no, as the men's wear is said to be very diff from the women's wear. But there is a lot of similarities elements in fabrics, acc...

Not exactly the same but there is an article in WWD.
Could someone post the whole text please:-)

Dark Magic
MILAN — Italian designers killed two birds with one stone last weekend by showing women's pre-fall looks during the men's shows. Obviously charged up for the runway, the choices ran the gamut from Donatella Versace's va-va-voom leather looks to Roberto Cavalli's full-on kimono ensembles.

apart from the obvious colour/fabric connection, i agree with the rst posted here, menswear shows are not really hints of womenswear..

like nght said, its interesting to see designers using menswear as a platform for their womenswear collections, like they just did in Milan, but this is relatively a new startegy focused on earlier orders, extra publicity and complimenting the menswear shows

ngth, the little wwd text..that was all
.. its was basically a rather indifferent photo editorial with stills from womenswear at the menswear shows, nothing worth reposting i'm afraid...
