Donatella Versace - Designer, Creative Director of Versace

I have noticed that Versace is shortly becoming more and more saught after as the designs are shifting away from being tasteless and crass to tailored and classy. Notice these comparissons:

i agree. it wasnt a long time ago that I remember say not again with the sexy-flowy long evening gown ness that donatella was repeating again and again.

just when i was thinking it was about time for them to go the hell away.
i'm loving mariacarla's dress

Actually that safety pin dress worn by Liz Hurley is classic gianni. It totally fit the early 90's.

I completely agree! Her show was a hit this year. Im so proud of her. If she keeps that same rythm she has a great couple of years ahead.
Btw I just bought a pair of Versace couture jeans at Value Village! ( thrift store) for 3.99. They have to be real too because #1 it says versace on the tag, another tag says Versace couture and the other tag is all in italian!. so im very excited about my bargain lol..

Also I want to add I love the make-up too

So glad!

I've waited for so long. I love Donatella. I love Versace.she's on the right path and should keep on going.
Soon we'll see Versace on a Paris runway, Atelier Versace that is. Hopefully.
What do you think? should she bring it back? I guess it's not even on their agenda right now...
I just love Atelier Versace, I think couture week misses it greatly.
fingers crossed.

i loved Gianni's designs, and we shouldn't brand it now as "tasteless", as it certainly wasn't...

Versace was just a sexy most could not understand or handle properly. ^_^

But I agree, Versace is fully back. Notice how much it's starting to turn up on red carpets again.

I've always liked Versace and am glad that they're looking better these days..

I'm sure we could also find some winter coats in the tasteless shows. :innocent:

I don't really get what the whole fuss is all about with Versace... there is a general tendency towards a more covered up, sober look and so it was only natural that Versace followed... A lot of it has to do with the fact that they styled most of the dresses and a-line coats with opaques and leggings for a more layered, contemporary vibe, other than that, it's still very much the same Versace in terms of the branding (flashy metal hardware on zippers, belt buckles etc.) and finishing of the garments.

Gianni's work was fantastic, calling it tasteless is misunderstanding. It was at the time of Donatella's work for J.Lo and co that Versace became lost.

I've never actually looked at it from your view before Tricot, but now you've mentioned it, I see you have a point. Although I found some dresses, such as the sleevess dress with a triangle cut-out that Patricia Schmid wore, that I thought was a pretty fantastic shift from the last few seasons.

For me it's still a label that hasn't really been able to coherently move forward and the designs that characterised it were something that was perfectly fitting for the time period like Meg said. Perhaps it's a time-specific label that doesn't have true longevity (as in broad appeal). Sure, the generation of people who wore Versace will still swear by it - Hurley etc. but after that, where can it go?

susie- I think we have to keep in mind that fashion moves in cycles, and therefore, that style of clothing will reemerge- with updates of course- at some time in the not so distant future

Yes I agree that it probably will.......... but hasn't it been trying to keep the same aesthetic with updates for the past 10 or so years? It remains to be seen whether Versace will pull off a complete revival.....

i didn't 'get' Versace first time around and i certainly dont get Versace now..
agreed that Donatella is making the house a tiny bit more 'elegant' but like trico said above, 'conservatism' is been a main mood for the last couple of seasons, Versace just went with the general trend, nothing more nothing less, which actually is not what their clientelle wants.. hence most Versace girls shopping at Cavalli, who after all is 'the new Versace'

for the House Gianni Built, like susie, i'm curious to see where they are aiming for in the seasons to come, cause their direction to date, feels a tiny bit muddy to me

I think the customer that is looking for that ultimate 'rich', visibly luxurious wardrobe, I don't see that woman wearing a chunky turtleneck jumper dress or an a-line peacoat... she might wear a looser coat with a plunging neckline with the waist cinched in a wide patent belt with visible metal hardware or a thinner knit dress with a drap-y collar, probably off the shoulder.

F/W 2005 was definitely much closer to the Versace spirit, but translated in a much more accessible, paired-down way.
