Donatella Versace - Designer, Creative Director of Versace

well wheres all the drama when i saw the word versace i ex[ected some fireworks anyway back on topic i i were to design for them i d go back to the sexy versace not their new look tame versace
lots of cuts here and there and also colour like the season jlo got her tropical printed dress

versace goddess, i think you are right, Versace needs a 'younger' approach
as for adcvertising.. hm, a vicious circle i guess, since the company is been
>selling less> having money problems> cuts down on advertising

urban, drama is over.. finito la musica.. passato la fiesta
those who have nothing to say on topic, can try their luck elsewhere..

we are keeping an eye, much more on this thread ;)

Sorry, but as long as Donatella's in charge,I see very poor chances of revival for Versace...And I'm actually sorry for that...

Is Donatella still taking drugs? I would have thought her clean up is the first step to recovery of the label. even at that I just think that, at the moment, its too synonymous with late eighties/early nineties & people like Liz Hurley.... I never liked the label much but it used to have a place in fashion - that place is now filled by the likes of cavalli & Gucci. Versace must have really suffered with the success of Gucci.

shes been out of rehab, so officially she should be clean

i agree on Versace suffering, in my book mainly from Roberto Cavalli, right after Gianni's murder... Cavalli was much more 'elegant' less sexy in pre-gianni's-murder days, he used to dress more 'intellectual/society' than 'sex/star society' clearly a strategy move and a clever one for R.C.

Mmmm - I am not sure about this one Lena - in a way I think that Versace needs to lay low for a few years before a revival is ripe. I think a new direction would be wise, but one which is still sexy & true to the original audacity & vibrancy of Gianni. Don't get me wrong.....it will probably never appeal to me, but, I am sure there's a lot of $$$ in that brand yet just waiting for the the right maestro to tap into it. Its more of a business case than an artistic one i think. i think a great deal of damage has been done to the brand by the image of Donatella...

Its funny ,although I have never really liked versace clothes themselves I remember getting really excited about the old adverts with the supermodels.... I'm pretty sure that couldn't be repeated though.

What do you think lena?

Thats interesting Lena I didn't know that about Cavalli dressing intellectuals..... Its funny as I hadn't really heard of Cavalli until the late nineties. But Cavalli has cut right into the sexy starlet market that Gianni used to dress. I'm not sure that fashion's mood at the moment is very accomodating to the blatantly sexy....I think we've all had our fill over the Tom Ford years. Maybe thats just prudish me though!!!!

I really miss the old Versace. Spring 2003 was the worst collection in my opinion. It was really too sl*tty versus Spring 2001. I wish she would get back to designing like that. She's got potential! (I think, lol) Examples:

If I were put in charge of designing for Versace I would do a total makeover. First, I'd tone down the runway presentation since they're having so many financial issues. I'd do an all black runway, spotlights on the models, that's it. I'd draw inspiration from something unexpected for Versace. I'd try to keep the silhouette clean, lean and tight, not too much color, mainly black with shots of color in unexpected places. Pencil skirts, narrow leg trousers, fitted jackets and coats lined in prints from the archive, tailored tuxedos, slim long gowns cut to every curve. Not too bare, just some flashes of leg and back. I'd keep the glitz to a minimum as well. Overall the collection would be about line and sihouette, no overt themes. Classic, luxe accessories. The models would have their hair pulled back into a tight ponytail set low on the head, some clear lip gloss and clean skin, no traces of the big hair and heavy make-up that's become the trademark.

I'd revamp it, make it today, not so gaudy and flashy. My first collection I'd just start with a blank canvas, I wouldn't draw a whole lot from the archives at first, but I'd keep enough of the glamour and sensuality to make it Versace....that's just what I'd do to change the image, then I'd slowly play with classic Versace themes like draping and color but I'd limit everything, the main problem lies in the fact that there's always so much going on in Donatella's collections and that needs to change.

I agree, although Gucci definitly conqured the celebrity area of fashion that Versace had before Gucci got big. And as far as the glitzy over the top market Cavalli has taken that over as of late, Versace really has lost so much of it's steam and I think that now that Tom isn't at Gucci, the celebrity market is ripe for the picking. If Versace changed it's gears, then it could really take the place Tom left.

Wow  This thread is filled with future fashion stars... so many fresh cool ideas :flower:

I'm a fan of Atelier Versace more so than Ready to wear. I especially loved the couture show which was model-less and Donatella just had the dresses on forms and invited the critics. I thought that was a bold move and the clothes speak volumes on why that was a wonderful move. I can't remember that year or collection though, someone know? I think it was an A/W collection but I could be wrong. But even Atelier is lacking. From the S/S 04 collection, I think there was maybe 9 pieces at most that I was smitten with. I either loved the pieces or hated them.

I used to be a big fan of Versace and I still have loads of pieces from collections past but lately I've just not been a fan of the glitz. And I guess what I would do is just tone down the glitz, add it here and there, keep the overly glitzy pieces for those that expect it, but then have pieces for people who don't want to stop traffic.

And I love the handbag idea that someone mentioned. There have been some great handbags from Versace, much better than Louis Vuitton, thats for sure but they come and go so quickly.

i think they've tried to create an 'IT' bag several times...but never came up with anything strong enough....

that would definitely boost sales...but they also don't have a strong logo...that medusa head can be a bit off-putting...and 'garish'...imo...
