If I were put in charge of designing for Versace I would do a total makeover. First, I'd tone down the runway presentation since they're having so many financial issues. I'd do an all black runway, spotlights on the models, that's it. I'd draw inspiration from something unexpected for Versace. I'd try to keep the silhouette clean, lean and tight, not too much color, mainly black with shots of color in unexpected places. Pencil skirts, narrow leg trousers, fitted jackets and coats lined in prints from the archive, tailored tuxedos, slim long gowns cut to every curve. Not too bare, just some flashes of leg and back. I'd keep the glitz to a minimum as well. Overall the collection would be about line and sihouette, no overt themes. Classic, luxe accessories. The models would have their hair pulled back into a tight ponytail set low on the head, some clear lip gloss and clean skin, no traces of the big hair and heavy make-up that's become the trademark.
I'd revamp it, make it today, not so gaudy and flashy. My first collection I'd just start with a blank canvas, I wouldn't draw a whole lot from the archives at first, but I'd keep enough of the glamour and sensuality to make it Versace....that's just what I'd do to change the image, then I'd slowly play with classic Versace themes like draping and color but I'd limit everything, the main problem lies in the fact that there's always so much going on in Donatella's collections and that needs to change.
