Georgia, A Love Story
8/31/2017 by STEVEN YATSKO

Lithuanian supermodel meets a designer in her home country of Georgia, they become fast friends, and the rest is suitable fodder for their memoirs. That’s how these photographs of Edita Vilkeviciute clad in pieces by Tamuna Ingorokva landed in ours laps. Edita? Of course. A model who needs little in the way of an introduction, but Tamuna Ingorokva’s name is just making acquaintances with headlines. Tbilisi Fashion Week–a hub for the former Soviet Union country’s emerging fashion scene has one of its most prodigious exports Demna Gvasalia of Balenciaga and Vetements fame. It’s in this capital city where TFW started in 2009, and has cultivated a roster of (mostly) Georgian designers like Keti Chkhikvadze, George Keburia, and Nino Babukhadia amongst Tamuna Ingorokva.

Established in 2002, Tamuna’s label is lately amassing admirers and, well, some just happen to be supermodels–that’s a good thing, though Ingorokva stresses her collections are tailored for every kind of woman. The designer got her start at the Fine Arts Academy Tbilisi, Fashion Department before moving to Paris to study at ESMOD. Away, she felt affected by her home countries strained politics, saying, “While living abroad and watching my country and people from a distance I desperately felt for them and remembered the beauty and elegance of the relationships, language, culture that have always engaged guests and foreigners visiting Georgia, but since the desperate times the sparkle of my people faded.”

It would be after returning to Georgia and establishing herself as one of the countries noteworthy fashion talents that she would meet Edita by way of a mutual stylist friend. Vilkeviciute recounts the meeting, “The first time I travelled to Georgia was with my best friend Ketevan Gvaramadze–Ketevan grew up in Tbilisi, so I was able to experience the country from an ‘insider’s perspective’. I immediately felt at home, which is interesting because there are very few similarities with Lithuania where I grew up,” and at a jazz festival Edita met Tamuna, “I fell in love with her immediately!” The chummy meeting added to the Lithuanian icon’s already enthusiastic impression of Tbilisi, “You can feel a creative energy. It’s amazing to see people being so inspired. Georgia is having a big moment in our industry right now and you can see that they are really enjoying it.”

Between them a shared love for the hospitable, culturally rich country of Georgia dovetailed their relationship. So much so that Edita offered to walk her F/W 17 show in Tbilisi. When Edita married husband Björn Frederic Gerling, Tamuna designed her wedding dress–Edita coming back to the country for fittings. It was all seamless Edita recounts, “I was amazed by Tamuna’s inherent sensibility of feeling what I wanted even if I had no idea what I wanted! Tamuna, Ketevan and I created something that was so “me”.

Thanks for sharing. I just can't help but feel kind of jealous of her beauty. It is so natural, effortless and alluring

Vital stats
Age: 28
Nationality: Lithuanian
Résumé: Scouted at the age of 17 while vacationing with her family, Vilkeviciute’s sultry brand of Eastern-bloc beauty has made her a favorite with the likes of Mario Testino, Bruce Weber and Tom Ford.

I Used To Have Body Hang-Ups... I thought my fingers and smile were weird. But being in this business has taught me to love these things; now I feel confident, happy and sexy.

I Like My Privacy... Social media is a great business tool, but avoiding Instagram hasn’t hindered my career because models are booked for many different reasons. Some because
of their amount of followers, some because of the way they perform, some because of their unique look or personality.

I’ve Worked With So Many Visionaries... It’s always a pleasure working with Mario Testino and I love shooting with Bruce Weber, who still uses only analog cameras. Walking in Tom Ford’s debut show was magical and working with Karl Lagerfeld, especially on his movie about Coco Chanel, was a big highlight for me.

Modeling Has Had Unexpected Longevity... When I started, I thought that this job would last about three years. Twelve years later, I’m still here and still enjoying it, so
it’s difficult to say when and what’s next. I have some projects that I’m working on that should keep me busy for a few years...

I Highly Recommend Getting Married… I can’t begin to describe how much I enjoyed my wedding [to Björn Frederic Gerling in Montalcino, Italy]. It was like a four-day vacation with all the people I love. Although I didn’t know what style of dress I wanted, I knew exactly how I wanted to feel, and Georgian designer Tamuna Ingorokva made the perfect one for me.

Although I find her to be "the" body in fashion and absolutely beautiful, I always felt that she booked fewer jobs than expected. Any idea why? Is it because of the often "sexually charged/nude" works she does?

^ I think she has this old school beauty. It's not a look that is "in" currently, but it's classic and because of that, she will always book jobs. She's just not going to be "la fille du moment" with a massive campaign season.

Surprised she hasn't been snatched up and locked into a big beauty contract though.

I think you forget that she starts to be "old" for modeling standard, and you have now to look what she achieved in the past to really judge.
For sure her best time was few years ago, but she booked basically everything a model could dream of, including all best shows, in being hardly 1.72 that's quiet a great career to me.
For sure, she is probably in the top girls the one who went really far in naked stuff, and some videos (and backstage video) she did are clearly more erotic than fashion, bur I dont think it has done anything bad to her.
You also must consider the personality of the girl about that, I mean, these pics posted in her friend designer studio, it is clearly "fun" naked pics. You will not find much top girls OK to have such style pics all over te net...but at first, your will also not find lot of top girls just having fun to be shooted naked in crap light with crap camera by a friend:smile:
But..it is Edita!
The only one I can think about as confortable with no clothes on, it is Sara Sampaio:smile:

I remember reading her interviews that she has never aimed to over-work herself and always paid attention to her healthy lifestyle, family, friends etc. She has always kept herself very private and I wouldn't be surprised if that affected her work-load too. Also, in a recent interview she mentioned that after her marriage she is slowly going to pull away from modelling

exactly.
and it needs also to consider her lack of interest for social medias, in an era where somehow it counts a lot in this business (for me it has no sens but it is another topic) for example for VS, a brand in itself so much into online communication, I think it is not an option nowadays to have models weak on social medias. for me that's the only objective reason which might have been a minus for some jobs.

but again...for a girl quiet short, with no serious Instagram, with no serious Facebook...what a carreer:smile:
