Those backstage shots at Mugler are surreal, she looks like a painting.
i know right.. she looks really cinematic in those pics that i'm surprised that they're candidsright - they looks like "movie-star pics "
"I BOUGHT ALL THE MAGAZINES I COULD FOR MY FAMILY AND FRIENDS."
[Ed. Note: Elena Bartels is a German model at DNA. At only eighteen years old, she has already appeared on the cover of Vogue Italia, in ads for Louis Vuitton, and in editorials lensed by Steven Meisel, Mikael Jansson, and Viviane Sassen.]
"I arrived here [in New York] a couple weeks ago from Germany and did some editorials the first week, now I'm doing casting. For New York Fashion Week I did Marc by Marc, Alexander Wang, and Tommy Hilfiger. Those shows were on my birthday so it was a nice present.
I got interested in modeling because my sister is a model too, her name is Caroline, and she is also with ProMod in Hamburg, which is our mother agency. Her ex-booker would ask me if I wanted to model too and I always said 'no.' She kept asking me, so I thought maybe I’d try it. I saw the pictures of my sister and they looked beautiful, so finally I thought, 'I want to do that too.' I went to the agency a year after she asked, and another booker took me upstairs for Polaroids and sent them to a few people. After that I got offered to do Burberry and started there with London Fashion Week, then the other countries followed.
At model castings it’s always good to dress nicely and show what your style is. I don’t think about it too much. I quite like to dress simple, like tight jeans and a cool t-shirt… Or a nice jacket with basics underneath and one or two cool statement pieces." -- Elena Bartels to SHOP-GHOST

My go-to movie is anything that lets me drift off to sleep. I can't help myself, just any film I put on, I fall asleep.... but then I really don't mind it. The only films that kept me awake recently have been Water for Elephants, Black Swan and My Sister's Keeper.
My favorite city is Hamburg, of course. It's home and it's just right. I can't even explain it. But, I love NY and I will always come back to NY!
The best part of being a model is gaining my independence. I'm 18 and leaving home and seeing the world from where I stand really for the first time.
One of my favourite shoots was Interview Russia, with Mark Segal. All the models where hypnotized. I actually can't describe it so well because I was effectively unconscious, but waking up, the hypnotist told me to come to laughing and to be super happy.... I have quite honestly never felt like that before.
A model who inspires me is Maria Carla Boscono. She has it all.
She is cool, super professional, she knows herself and performance, and her presence is incredible.
Going to castings I usually wear tight black jeans and a simple top. It's the shoes that I like to pay attention to, be it flats or heels. I really like the way a shoe can play with the design and proportion of my body.
When I'm not working I like to complain that I'm not working, but then nobody listens, so I work out a lot. Otherwise I'm a predictable young woman. I hang out with friends in cafes and now in Central Park, and then of course, Skype!
Appearing on the cover of Vogue Italia was very good for making me a poor girl. I bought all the magazines I could for my family and friends.
I love being in love.
I hate the word hate.
If I were an animal I would be one that loves and never hates. An orangutan perhaps. =)
