Elizabeth Ayodele might just be 18 of age and in 3rd year of medical school, but the girl is so HOT right now that not even hot sauce can compare! Fendi, Mui Mui, YSL are some of the high fashion designer labels that the Nigerian model walked for this past Fall17 fashion week circle, from Milan to Paris, there was no stopping the rising star.
We spent the better part of this weekend arranging a photoshoot with Elizabeth who returned only a few days back from a shoot with Mario Testino for Vogue and may be on her way back for a Fendi campaign really soon. Our shoot was magical. Elizabeth brought a world class game and so did our Creative Director Tokyo James and 19 year old photographer Asamaiige. This makes the only other publication to have created magic with her, yet.

Elizabeth Ayodele will forever remember the Autumn/Winter ’18 shows as the time when her life changed forever. The shy 18-year old University of Lagos Medical student went from her third year at school straight into the life of an international model signed to not only Nigeria’s FEW Models, but IMG worldwide (one of the most powerful modeling agencies in the world). It all started a few months ago when Elizabeth, like many girls her age, signed up for the FEW Models Academy and instantly caught the eyes of the agency’s director who saw beyond her 5 feet 8 inches height.
At the time of our shoot, Elizabeth had just returned from her first European tour where she’d walked for storied houses such as Saint Laurent, Fendi and Miu Miu as well as snagging a shoot with noted fashion photographer Mario Testino for Vogue India. The young school girl who left Lagos for Paris Fashion Week had returned a budding top model with credits that those who had been in the industry before her were yet to achieve.
This meant that booking Elizabeth would be tough. IMG had to approve all aspects of the shoot from the photographer to the hairstylist and makeup. Her hair was to be in cornrows as they’d carved out a look for her.
I was very much excited as myself and Tokyo James headed to the University of Lagos to pick her up for the shoot. I wasn’t sure what to expect as I’d never met her and only knew the bits I picked up from reading the many headlines cropping up about the new model. See, the media had joined in celebrating her international success so there were many publications to pick from. I tried to imagine her. I expected her to have a bit of airs. To be honest, I wouldn’t have minded that as she’d earned it after all. However, The girl I met was a charming 18-year old with an arresting presence who had the most beautiful smile that I’d ever seen. With eyes as clear as water and dimples that completely arrests you. As she smiled I took notice of her perfectly arranged dentition (white like those on toothpaste commercials) and pillow-y lips.
‘She’s just 5’8″?’ I thought. How could she walk Saint Laurent and Fendi who are known for their likeness for really tall models? Elizabeth could tell I was genuinely star struck as I kept stealing glances at her. She couldn’t stop smiling as her shyness revealed her age. I realized how awkward it must be for her, at such a young age, in such a short time. Quite unprecedented. Only Kate Moss could come close to this.
As we drove to the location of the shoot, I couldn’t contain my excitement anymore as I asked her countless questions. I got to find out that she was told not to expect anything from the Fendi casting but she went in and she was booked. I found out how she shot with Mario Testino and didn’t know who he was at the time. So innocent! In her shoes, I’d certainly have lost my cool.
For Elizabeth, it’s actually about the work and not so much the celebrity of it which is why her management in New York and Nigeria are trying their best to have her maintain a low profile except for work.
A week after the shoot, I accompanied Elizabeth and Bolajo Fawehinmi (FEW’s director) to the French embassy where her passport had been submitted for a visa application. We weren’t aware at the time, but she’d miss tons of campaigns and editorials due to embassy delays. When I found out, all I could think of were the big-*** brands that were optioning and even booking her for jobs. For the next couple of years, her life will revolve around Paris, London, New York, Milan and sometimes Lagos where she’ll put in her sweat and time into solidifying what she’s already started.
Elizabeth’s rise to the international stage represents the validity of dreams. Months ago, she was just a remarkable student chasing a career in Medicine and today, she’s moving abroad to start a new life in the modeling industry. She will live a life that many can only dream of and only a handful have lived – and now, she belongs to these select few.
