GOOD SPORT
Amusement parks in Sweden seem to be ripe for scouting. Like her fellow model Emma Karlsson, that's where Elsa Sylvan, whose sculptural face and lithe silhouette has appeared on top runways, was discovered. Style.com caught up with her in between shows at Stockholm fashion week. Dressed in a blue-and-white striped dress she bought at a sale of theater costumes, she talked to us about fashion, Swedish myths, and soccer.
How would you describe Swedish fashion?
I don't know why the words "mature" and "equality" come to me when thinking about Swedish fashion, but Swedish designers are playful about fabrics and details but keep it very simple and rarely overdo it. The word "equality" refers to the small gap between female and male design here. Colors, forms, and fabrics don't depend on gender that much. The emphasis is on the design of the clothes more than the body beneath it.
What are the most common misconceptions about Sweden and Swedes?
Sad to say, none. We do love alcohol; we have a high suicide rate; it is very dark during the winter; and people are very introverted. But we do not have ice bars on the streets, neither only blond or Christian people, and we do have a very good welfare system, with free health care and education.
What are your favorite and least favorite things about New York?
My favorite thing is the multicultural life and the exchange between people, and the least favorite is the expensive living, since, for example, artists and people with a less fortunate background find it hard to survive there.
Do you have a favorite sport?
I have played soccer longer than I've known how to read, so I'm excited to follow the Women's World Cup, which starts soon. In the international leagues, Barça is my absolute favorite team. Every time I see Ronaldinho play, my chin is on the floor with amazement.
Who's your style icon?
I wish I could drop some names but I guess what speaks to me is when someone's personality is shown in their choice of clothes. And I can't escape the fact that my mum has a huge influence on me. She couldn't care less about what or who to wear—she dresses for the weather and what's comfortable, which gives me a very grounding and healthy balance in this business.
What's your fall fashion must-have?
A wireless connection, maybe? If you want to be in and accurate, the fastest updates in fashion are through the Internet….
