^ interesting standards they have for plus size models. would not put emma in that category myself, and i doubt that many other people would either.

There’s photogenic and then there’s Emma MacLaren. Google Images reveals not only an enviable array of covers, high-end campaigns and catwalk appearances, but the very fact that you can’t take a bad picture of this 21-year-old British beauty.

Signed to Europe’s largest – and one of the world’s leading – modelling agencies Models 1, Emma is also a singer and personal trainer-in-training with Bodyism.

What’s more, Emma is strikingly warm and down-to-earth, making it an added pleasure to discover her beauty and wellbeing secrets…

You entered into the modelling world at such a young age; where might your path have taken you if you hadn’t been scouted?

I had my heart set on Musical Theatre. From the age of 6, I began performing in amateur productions each summer and I loved being part of my school choir. As I grew up my passion for music, singing, dancing and acting grew too. I dreamed of performing on the West End/Broadway for years and perhaps one day I might have the opportunity to.

Have you always felt confident in yourself?

No. Confidence is very important in all aspects of life, especially modelling. If you have confidence in yourself, you look and feel beautiful. Working with different photographers and creative directors has definitely helped me to grow as a model over the years. You’re constantly learning from the artistic team around you and this helps to bring new creativity to your next job.

How do you stay grounded in such a demanding industry?

I love to stay close with my family and friends. I love them all so much; they are such a special part of my life. The busyness of the fashion industry can really take you by surprise at times and so to have that close connection with home is really important to me.

What drew you to Bodyism and Clean & Lean and how has it changed your life?

As I’m based in London, I wanted to try Personal Training there. Having seen Nathalie Schyllert’s blog post on the Models 1 blog site, I was intrigued to find out more about ‘Clean and Lean’.

Since beginning training with the Bodyism team last spring, my fitness and whole approach to exercise has changed. My physical fitness has improved and I’ve gained a real understanding of what it means to lead a healthy lifestyle. Bodyism is such a supportive and encouraging team. I have learnt so much from them. :)

What would we find if we looked in your fridge?

I was brought up eating a well-balanced and healthy diet. I love fish and seafood, so there will always be quite a lot of my favourites in my fridge such as smoked salmon, crab, salmon and tuna. I love eggs as an alternative protein, especially for breakfast – there are so many varieties to try!

Natural yoghurt and fresh berries (blueberries, raspberries, blackberries and strawberries) are always on the top shelf!

I like to buy organic produce wherever possible, including salad and vegetables. Dark green and leafy veg is the perfect combination of iron, vitamins and fibre. Mixed salad and herbs are always on my shopping list – I like to mix it up, always incorporating these into my meals each day.

My favourite hydrating drinks are coconut water, chlorophyll water and the best is cucumber water!

What does your fitness regime entail?

I like to be active every day, even on my rest days. So I will always try to do something but at a lower intensity, such as yoga or a long walk in the countryside with my dogs.

I tend to train 3 times a week, either with Bodyism or by myself. I also like to incorporate other activities that I love e.g. swimming, netball and Dynamic Reformer Pilates with Dmitri Tkatchev at Epoch Fitness.

It’s really important to have variety, and not to stick to the same routine. This keeps working out fun and encourages you to try something new each week.

What made you start your Personal Training qualification? And when will we see you training clients?

I studied sports science whilst at school, as I knew that I wanted to pursue something in that field in the future.

I was so encouraged after meeting and training with Nathalie Schyllert. She is my role model, a beautiful person and an amazing trainer. Having seen how well she can work as a model and a Personal Trainer, this motivated me to apply for a PT course.

I’ve almost finished my course and I can’t wait to feel confident enough to train clients!

As one of Models 1′s most booked models, do you have many modelling ambitions remaining?

Yes, I think all models do! I have been so blessed with all the opportunities that I have been given so far, from who I have met and worked with, to the places that I have travelled to, but I think we all still have goals, dreams or aspirations to fulfil. I have always dreamt of being on the cover of Vogue. I feel that to be on the cover of any magazine, is when you are a truly recognised and respected model.

What are the best beauty secrets you’ve gleaned from your travels?

Most importantly, I always have a 3-step morning and evening beauty regime – cleanse, tone and moisturise. This is essential when your are dehydrated (perhaps from a long-haul flight). A great tip is to always carry miniatures of your favourite products with you, then there’s no excuse not to treat your skin well!

Any favourite natural beauty brands or treatments?

For years I have used ESPA and REN beauty products, as they contain natural essential oils that smell beautiful, leaving your skin soft and glowing. ESPA’s bath oils are the perfect remedy when you need to relax. I love REN’s Tonic Moisture Mist for a quick rehydrate and Frankincense Revitalizing Night Cream. The perfect treatment for my lips is Lucas’s Pawpaw ointment.

Are you a spa girl or DIY?

I am definitely both. I love having treatments at a spa, or being pampered by my gorgeous Beauty Therapist Sister. There are some wonderful ‘at home’ beauty products though, such as a freshly made face mask from LUSH (I love ‘Catastrophe Cosmetic’) or a salt scrub body mask.

With a big thanks to Emma and wishing her the best of luck with the rest of her PT training!

Well I guess if you don't fit into the sample sizes you are plus sized. Although it does make me a little sad that somebody like Emma would be considered plus sized.
