'ENOUGH IS ENOUGH' - clothes acquisition, hysteria and the perfect wardrobe

i have recently uncovered some 'buried treasures' actually...:woot:
*some never even worn...
:ninja:

^_^....

Umm...but I thought clothes with their tags still attached were in vogue  OMG the last several posts were funny but ring true for me as well! I've been trying really hard to prune my wardrobe...mainly because if I don't, I won't have room for anything new. The problem is I'm still working on the mentality of buy something, take something out and give to charity -- right now I'm at buy 3 or 4, and get rid of one...but not that one! January sales were not an easy temptation to pass by :innocent:

thanks jetset and softgrey . . .

now i am starting to get into buying the baby clothes . . .her shoe collection is already beginning to rival mine.

I think I compulsively over-shop when I am lacking creative/intellectual outlets....and I actually have to remind myself that shopping neither cures frustration over this lack....nor does it feed inspiration. :ermm:

But I find it easier to curb the impulse desire to buy more when I visit my closet, and see the beautiful things I already have--especially the ones that are still waiting to be worn. :p

i totally agree with that. i have found myself really overspending in times when i am bored or frustrated (in a bad relationship for example).

I decided to count all my bags, I have 18 just in active use. im not counting luggage. I don't know if it's a lot or not, but It constantly feels like I don't have enough.... I am not morally prepared to count the shoes, I have more than 50 pairs for sure.
As for buying few investment pieces, sure, it makes sense. I'd rather have 2 made-to-measure Loro Piana blazers than 8 from Zara, except I can't just go and have them made. I need to save up, consider carefully which colour and fabric I want, I'd have to go for something classic. If you're 42 and have the money to afford it - sure, invest all you want. As for now, Im sticking to impulse buying and cheap thrills. :ninja: Stone me if you want.

^ I have no wish at all to stone you ;)

As far as bags, I will say this ... though I have a few more (and I do mean a few), I use two bags per year, one per season. Actually, as I think about it, I have only 3 bags right now. Everything else I've given away, and one I exchanged. And I feel I do have enough ;)

So I would just suggest the thought that you have the feeling of "not enough," and that that feeling is completely unrelated to what is actually in your closet, in the stores, or anything else "real" ... :flower:

Yeah, i think it has something to do with the fact that fashion moves on SO quickly. Most of the things are buy are "trendy" meaning that if they don't break after two wears, they'll die a quiet death in the back of my closet. That's why I'm so much against buying expensive "it" items - shoes, belts, BAGS because you spend all this $$$ on them and the more highly publisized and desirable an item was one season, the less you want to wear it the next. That's why I only use maybe 50% of my wardrobe and accessories - there is always a hot item out that will be "so over" next week. One half of my closet consists of the "so over" items.

Myself, I don't try to stay away from trends ... they are what makes fashion fun after all ;) I just try to make sure that everything I buy is "so me" vs "it." That way, even when the "it" item changes, what I've bought is still me--which hasn't changed. You have never seen me in the double-dip thread ... not that there's anything wrong with that :p

Some good news in my own debt repayment- I over-saved for my income tax (I'm self-employed) and now I can pay off one of my credit cards entirely! Now there's just one more to pay off...

I feel that I'm always in the process of perfecting my wardrobe, and never really enjoying it as is. Part of this is for practical reasons (ie. I only have one pair of jeans that fit properly atm) but there is another side to it which is that feeling of incompletion...always looking forward to that moment where somehow perfection will be achieved: "three months from now I'll have everything I need and getting dressed will be fun and easy"...I've been saying that for years.

It doesn't help that I get a completely different idea of how I want to look every 6 months or so. I definitely use clothes as a means of expressing, or even defining, my identity, and that has always been in flux. I think I also have used clothes as a means of escapism. Right now I feel like I've come full circle to the point I was at when I first got truly interested in fashion at age 9-10. That feeling of just wanting to look feminine, young, and modern. I'm over trying to look like Marlene Dietrich, a futuristic punk, a hippie... but I never know when some other part of me is going to want to take over and wear nothing but bandage dresses and over-the-knee boots or something. It's frustrating.

But imagine how boring life would be if you already had all the clothes you'd ever need??? Where's the fun in that? ;)

fashionista-ta, i do it just the same way!
i'd never buy anything if it wouldn't be "me", just because it's in fashion ... i think i did that once, when i bought some of those stupid huge sunglasses - and the only time i've worn them was while trying them on in the store
