Fashion Fringe, the initiative created to identify and practically nurture young design talent to establish serious businesses, is now in its fourth year. It has been a proven success giving solid starts to both past winners Basso & Brooke, Erdem and Gavin Douglas and two runners-up Sinha-stanic and Modernist.
Each year 4 finalists are chosen and given financial and practical help in the form of technical assistance, studio space and materials. This culminates in a yearly show at London Fashion Week where their collections are shown, the winner decided and a development grant awarded.
Journalist Colin McDowell, still the driving force behind the scheme, has attracted impressive sponsorship. IMG, Centre for Fashion Enterprise, London Development Agency, L’Oréal Paris, the Mayor’s Office, Red Bull have now been joined by Superdrug and Net-A-Porter.
The judging panel chaired by Tom Ford includes Christopher Bailey of Burberry amongst other fashion experts.
The Designer Finalists
Andrea McWha: McWha is a 24 year old from Stockport. She studied fashion design at the University of Central Lancashire and has designed for Coast. Her collection is inspired by climate change, and given the UK summer of 2007 especially, the shift to wet weather. New fabric developments excite her to use waterproof, practical materials in a “gorgeous” way.
Maki Löfvander & Marcus Wilmont: Maki (31) and Marcus (30) from Sweden and Denmark respectively have both worked with Robert Cary-Williams in the past. Maki studied at the University College of Boras in Sweden, going on to work for Clare Tough and Sophia Kokosalaki. Marcus completed his design training at the Royal College of Art and worked for Ungaro in Paris. They describe their style as powerful, eccentric and sensual with lots of small secrets for the wearer to discover.
Graeme Armour: Glaswegian Armour (26) is another Central Saint Martin’s graduate. In the past he has worked with Alexander McQueen. His favourite fashion era is the thirties – “it was so fluid. It combines everything I feel I am as a designer – cut, detail, glamour, romanticism and history.”
Dejan Agatonovic: Serbian born Agatonovic (26) is ex Central Saint Martin’s. He‘s inspired by sophisticated, elegant women, beautiful conversations, and conversely, everyday life. He describes his style as a kind of modern couture that reflects refined harmony and luxury.
