I just took a class last spring on architecture and Just wanted to discuss.

Who are your favorite architects and what are your favorite buildings.

shigeru ban hands down! i've already posted him on numerous other threads because my love for him runs so deep

he uses materials such as paper to create inexpensive, durable and ultimately innovatively beautiful structures.

paper loghouses in kobe, 1995
housing for displaced people of kobe after earthquake.

paper church (made from carboard tubing)
as a result of the earthquake, the takatori church
in kobe burned down. the paper church has been
constructed in only 5 weeks by 160 church volunteers.

he also designed one of my favorite houses ever. the curtain wall house.

* he was also on the shortlist to redesign the world trade center

paper log house

each house's foundation was made of sand - filled beer cases

p4.jpg

the units occupied 16 mq each and had an 'acceptable'
appearance. the beer cases were rented from the
manufacturer and were also used to form steps during
the construction process.
even in these circumstances of great need,
ban's ever-present sense of humor was evident in
his description of his choice of 'kirin' beer crates over
those of a rival company, because their yellow color
harmonized better with the brown of the paper tubes

wow  .. thats amazing

the most impressive structure ever built has to go to the Kailasa Temple in India.

it was constructed in the 8th or 9th century. and it is the largest monolithic structure in the world, carved top-down from a single rock. It covers twice the area of the Parthenon in Athens and is 1.5 times high, and it entailed removing 200,000 tonnes of rock. It is believed to have taken 7,000 labourers reputedly using1" chisels over the course of 150years to complete the project.
