Name: Femke Elsinga
Nationality: Dutch
Profession: I’m a model, but I’m currently still in high school. Besides modelling, I also work a lot with kids as entertainer in campsites and as a babysitter. I hope I will be able to do full time modelling when I graduate.
Agencies: Elite Amsterdam, New York Models
Milestones: Because I’m still in school I haven’t done a lot of “big” things yet, but Amsterdam Fashion Week is absolutely something to remember. I love the whole ambiance as much as walking the catwalk. Oh, and a shoot I did on the beach. Freezing cold, but so cool!
Current location: the Netherlands
Tell us about your career as model. How did you get started?
When I just turned 14 I went to a fair for housekeeping with my mom in Amsterdam. Sounds silly, but it’s actually quite fun! We walked past a stand with some photos of models and we stopped for a minute to check out those pictures, when suddenly the lady behind the stand asked me if I’ve ever considered modelling. Well, I didn’t, but after a call to my dad I decided to sign up for The Model Convention. TMC is an event (which was held inside the fair for housekeeping) where girls and boys who want to become a model walk the catwalk in front of agencies from the whole world. In the end you get call-backs from the agencies who are interested in you. I got 5 call-backs and I was one of the girls with the most call-backs. After that I went to ModelCamp (by Freshmm) and I came in second, so I got a contract. Last December Freshmm merged with Elite Amsterdam, so I’m with Elite now.
What’s going through your mind when you’re modeling in front of the camera?
I fantasize about what food I should get after I’m done. Hahaha no, to be honest, I don’t think as much while I’m in front of the camera, I just do it. But food is always on my mind, lol.
What's your favorite/least favorite thing about being a model?
I actually do not really have a favorite part, I like it all! I love travelling, I love standing in front of the camera or walking the catwalk. I also love working with a different team every time, so you get to meet a bunch of people and make new friends all over the world. My least favorite part would be missing my family, friends and my cat. Luckily we have internet nowadays!
Are there any other models in the industry that you look up to?
Very cliché, but I’m a big fan of Doutzen Kroes. She’s also from Friesland and what I admire the most about her is how she combines modelling with motherhood. I think she’s doing a great job!
How would you define your personal style?
I would say casual. But I’m into a lot of things, so it varies from month to month what I’m wearing. I sometimes post #ootd pictures on my Instagram, so if you’re interested in what I’m into at the moment you can always check that out!
@femkeelsinga is my username.
And what are some of the heroes of your wardrobe?
Definitely my black heels! They are ridiculously comfortable for a pair of heels and I hope they will last forever. Maybe I should buy a second pair as back-up?
Could you give us your best beauty and exercise tip(s)?
Make exercising fun! I absolutely hate working out and running, but I found out that I’m really into Body Combat and dancing. I love biking and skating as well, so I try to do that a lot. And last, find a personal trainer that you like and you have fun with. If you’re in the Netherlands, you should plan a work-out with with Marjolein from Modelsinshape. Even I enjoy working out with her and you’re going to feel sore for at least two days!
For beauty, drink lots of water and eat healthy. It really makes a difference!
What is the one beauty product you can’t live without?
My lipbalm. I use Vaseline cream a lot, but I also like the little green thing from Superdrug Stores pls a lot. It has aloe vera in it, which I love!
What is your favorite city and where do you like to hang out there?
That’s a hard question! Every city has its own beauty. But you definitely have to visit Rome, it’s absolutely stunning.
What do you believe is the key to success for a model? What qualities does one need to succeed?
Have a good attitude. No one likes to work with an arrogant model who complains all the time. Just be nice, and be yourself.
What do you think MODELLIST-ID can do for the model community?
It’s important to feel safe in this industry, and MODELLIST-ID gives you the opportunity to share your experiences so that others can learn from it. Plus it’s a great way to make new friends!
What are your working on right now and what are your future aspirations?
Currently I’m in high school, so that’s my number one priority. I hope to graduate next year and go full time as a model. I don’t have a certain dream within modelling, I’m happy with every opportunity and we’ll see what the future brings!
