The Matches Game
By Nina Jones

LONDON — The Matches group of seven boutiques carries the likes of Marc Jacobs, Balenciaga and Lanvin, but owners Tom and Ruth Chapman still felt that something was missing. "We'd been planning to launch a collection for the last couple of years," said Tom Chapman. "But we didn't want it to be perceived as an own-label brand, which is usually done to create a lower price point. We wanted our customers to find something that wasn't available elsewhere."
So the Chapmans approached the New York-based design duo Christopher Crawford and Angela Deane of Christopher Deane to collaborate on the line, which is called Freda, after one of the Chapmans' favorite girls' names. The 23-piece collection includes items such as satin-back crepe cocktail dresses, cropped alpaca jackets and cotton velvet circle skirts. "It was exciting to be a able to work with the price point for Freda [which retails from $400 for velvet pants to $1,620 for a cashmere coat]," said Crawford, whose Christopher Deane line is contemporary. "We wanted to create pieces that would stay in the closet longer than one season, that would deserve a repeat performance," he added. To wit, the duo have added luxurious details such as textured wooden buttons on the collection's alpaca wool coat, and fabric-covered buttons on cropped wool jackets.

**it would be great if some of our british members could have a look at this stuff at a matches boutique and report back on quality, details, fit, price...etc...:flower:

Matches have done an own-label collection before and it wasn't very good, so maybe they've learned their lessons from that.

I've only been in the Notting Hill store because I live so close, but I don't even know if I could bring myself to make the trip downstairs to their depressing, soul-destroying, bland shop to see the new collection. I'm guessing it's pretty middle-aged and safe.

oh dear...is the store really that bad?...

but the piece says they carry decent labels...
mj, balenciaga, lanvin...??...

The labels they carry in the Notting Hill store are good....the rest of their stores cater to football hooligans, and this is how Matches made their fortune - by selling to the "Less desirables" in the suburbs, giving them all the Armani jeans and Versace lycra they could get their hands on throughout the 90's, then they opened in Ledbury Road thinking it gave them "Lady who Lunch" appeal. It has made them bigger players when buying from designers, but the feeling in the shop is bright & shiny with mini-department store feeling. They have their own credit card and give out Champagne on Saturdays.

I'm just not so sure their customers will appreciate the Freda line, because it won't have the same label-flash appeal when they take off their jackets at the next Saturday lunch meeting. The prices seem similar to other more desirable labels, and I think no matter what it looks like, these women would rather have Missoni on their backs :innocent:

Now I've made myself want to have a look at it! I could spy and see which people are drawn to what...

the f/w o6 stuff looks good...imo...

anyone seen it?...
it's on their website...
