Its a design house started by Marcel Wanders.He gained fame for his knot chair. He seems to have a limitless supply of crestive energy. He also has produced work for flos,cappelini & Droog design.
Its always refreshing to see your design oriented postings.
Im going to Houston nect week and they have a great design store called Sunset Settings.The women that owns it buys with her heart & always has very cool,Interesting adaptations in the way she presents each item and buys in very bizzare colorations.
I always buy a slew of things when Im there.

Astrid, if you like Rashid you should really check out Marc Newson's work (http://www.marcnewson.com ) they probably wouldn't appreciate the comparison but they often use similar shapes in their work: the curvilinear lines, organic shapes juxtaposed with use of synthetic materials. IMHO, Rashid is a better packaging designer than he is a furniture designer. He did some great packaging systems for Shiseido perfume and I believe his studio worked on the Prada cosmetics packaging. I must admit that some his lamps are cute, but his silly DJ table just gives me the jeebies.

Droog design is great, they do wonderfully clever stuff. I have one of their milk bottle lamps... makes me smile every time I look at it.

One of my favorite pieces of furniture is the Eames walnut stool, or the Time Life stool. I love how sculptural it is and the wood grain is so damn pretty. I have the one labelled C (in the picture below) at home.

That last picture you posted (of the Rashid chair) also looks like it was very much inspired by one of the classics that the Eames(es) did way back in the 50s. I'm posting a pic because the chair also happens to be one of my favorites.

i love droog! i collect little droog things

karim rashid makes me want to puke... his furniture is ok (yeah, karim, you really invented neon colors and blobby shapes, i'm sure :roll: ) but in his interviews he comes off as such an a$$... and has anyone seen the book he put out right after 9/11, called "i want to change the world"? it was all about how his brilliant designs would make history. he replaced mr. starck as most pompous designer in my book.

marc newson i like better, if only because he worked so hard before becoming a design superstar... in his book there are amazing pictures of the first pieces he made, and the hand-constructed metal-plate chaise... amazing!

i guess droog is my favorite, but the bourellac (sp.?) brothers are brilliant as well... for older stuff, i love gaetano pesce (i've got the up1 chair) and, of course, the eames, and joe columbo for ridiculous things

i used to be a giant industrial design wh*re but now i'm a clothing wh*re... being both would bankrupt my parents!

Yeah, I've got to agree that Rashid comes across as a bit of an ego maniac in his interviews. He certainly seems to work his design superstar image. I've heard that he now fancies himself a DJ. :roll:

Gaetano Pesce is great! Which one is the up1, digi? Is that the roundish, marshmallow-looking one with the "slice" cut out or the full circle poof?

As far as new design I love Platt & Young,Jasper Morrison,Jonathan Adler, Snow Crash & Marcel Wanders.
Karim Rashid's designs are all very derivative.He is super overrated and not very original.He owes a lot to Verner Panton.For instance, HIS SOUL.
I prefer vintage design furniture.I love Florence Knoll.Her work has totally stood the test of time without looking dated at all & is always elegant.I also know I am being clichéd but I do adore Charles & Ray Eames,not everything they did...They are kinda like Jil Sander.When they were good they were amazing.When they weren't they were still better than most.
I also Love Arne Jacobsen,Hans Wegner,Arne Vodder,Kaj Frank,Timo Sarpaneva,George Nakashima,Pesce,& Verner Panton.
I have very few new design pieces.I went through a fat period where I wasn't buying clothes and bought design instead.I'm in dire need of editing the collection but when I go to do it.I just cant get rid of anything.My loft is like Sanford and Son. Im a little tired of bumping in to chairs.Its ridiculous.I went through several fazes and it shows.
Someone will probably have to dig me out of my space at some point.

Florence Knoll is classic.

I love Arne Jacobsen and Hans Wegner, as I do most of the Danish furniture designers working at that time. I've been wanting a leather Swan chair for quite some time now. And I absolutely adore Poul Kjaerholm's work.

Regarding the Eames, it's funny but the pieces I like best of theirs tend to be the items that Ray in particular had worked on. Such as the walnut stool which was reported to be her favorite piece of furniture ever.

I also like George Nelson's furniture (and LOVE the bubble lamps) although he's most known for his quirky clocks. Most of my friends think my Bertoia diamond wire chairs are incredibly ugly, but I love them.

That is so weird because I think the sculptural qualities their work exuded was all Ray.I personally feel she is totally shafted in their legend because the time they inhabited.I think he may have had something to do with the ESU series but the subtle curves and poetic sensitivity their best work projects oozes her.If you look at the work she did prior to her meeting Charles at Cranbrook its all about form and sensuality.Where as he is more mathematical and geometric.
It sickens me when I read in Major publications & they mistake her as being his brother.(?)I have read it time and time again.I think if the work was produced in this time she would have a lot more acknowledgement,Or she would leave him.
Same thing with Charlotte Perriand & Le Corbusier.She is rarely given credit for the icons she assisted in creating.
It seems that design history has totally discredited women.I think its sad.
Florence Knoll apparently when the Eames were given the award for the La Chaise at moma in the forties felt unease at all the credit given to Charles when she knew from firsthand knowledge that it was all Ray who concieved & produced it.<span style='font-size:24'>RIDICULOUS!!!!</span>

I have a diamond chair & bird chair too.That's funny that your friends hate them.I think they are beautiful & very strong .
I also have a swan chair.I told you I went a little chair crazy! I sometimes can get carried away. My space looks like a store.ITS INSANE!!!
I urge you to buy a new swan chair if you opt to purchase one.Unless the vintage one is covered in leather or vinyl the foam breaks down and gets crunchy if it was done in any other textile.Plus the swan chair spins which can get annoying if you put your feet up.
I wanted it for years before I got one & now I need to find someone in the states to re-do the foam.That is no easy task.
Having vintage modern furniture restored is an up hill battle.People where I live anyway have totally destroyed the few pieces I was stupid enough to trust them with.a tulip stool and authentic an authentic Barcelona chair ruined because they just didn't get the dimensions right.It was a nightmare.I kept the stool in the lockbox of our truck for 3 months because it just made me sick to look at it.She used the wrong density foam and enlarged the seat to a ridiculous size.It looked like a giant mushroom. I WAS LIVID!!!!
I have box upon box of fabric to redo my Florence Knoll sofa and chair set after my cat used them as a scratching post,She was instantly de-clawed which I feel really bad for. Anywho.Im just scared they will ruin them too. Its a very odd situation to be in because I live in a loft and have very little storage and the boxes of fabric and garment racks are in my hallway which is the entrance of my home.Its very cumbersome too say the least. I keep changing my mind as to what color I want them to be and keep buying more fabric.I currently have 20 yards of red Knoll Mohawk,20 yards of Knoll Mohair Velvet in silver and two yards of the re-issued Girard facets. I was going to do the chair in the facets and re-do the sofa in red.Then I changed my mind and decided I wanted them to be done in the same color and bought the mohair velvet.
Its hard because the dealer I work with here has no good connections to any empathetic upholsterers.I have had some work done in Dallas which turned out great but I don't want to ship the sofa there to have him redo it.
STRESS!
The sofa I have is very minimal. Its the one that is tied and has no cushions.Its not the Barcelona inspired one. So the seat part is almost like a mattress.I don't think Im going to be able to find someone here to do it.
Oh well.I wont burden you with my woes.
