Newell began his career as a model and makeup artist in Houston and in 1977 moved to New York where he worked as a freelance makeup artist.

A Halston layout for Vogue in 1979, where he served as both a fashion model and makeup artist, brought him prominence.

He moved to L.A. in the early 80s and established George Newell Inc., a management and talent agency representing photographers, stylists, makeup artists and hair stylists.

During his career he designed many Vanity Fair and Vogue covers and his recent clients included Annette Bening, Warren Beatty, Barbra Streisand, Bette Midler, Michele Pfeiffer, Winona Ryder, Joan Severance, Kim Basinger and Cher.
