Meet IMG's Gertrud...a girl with charts on fire
I made that New Year's resolution...Stop Bashing The Modeling Industry... and I struggle to keep it. Though it is a struggle. What is frustrating about the industry of late has been its inability to change. Or more precisely , its inability to adapt to this new exhilarating post-recession social media universe that is current pop culture. We're still entrenched in an industry that has been running the Eileen Ford or the John Casablancas/Gerald Marie or the Michael Flutie/Paul Rowland playbook for so long you ache for someone to come up with a new idea around the fashion model. But look at that...again I veer close to bashing.
Since its Top 10 Newcomers time again, let's indulge in a shock value statement. Runway doesn't mean a damn thing anymore. Maybe six shows hold the faint hope of career momentum ...all the rest...noise and blur . Stacking a list of all the directional shows a girl did between New York, London, MIlan and Paris is a lovely practice but as the seasons go by an observer reading between the lines will start to notice that 80% of those runway girls count as show filler. What makes the difference between the girl who is the perfect fit with the strong walk whose career will read "runway only" and a true Top 10 Newcomer? Management and politics. Which is to say Management IS politics. Management is having a specific vision for the girl and having the relationships to make that specific vision a reality. And that convergence of vision and relationships happens at only a handfull of agencies. Which makes the issue of who manages the girl and how she is booked post-shows, the great X Factor in tracking the rising stars of the trade.
FW11 saw about 15 strong new possibilities move on the market. This at a time when Bambi, Britt, Melanie, Hailey, Julia, Arizona and daphne are still in serious rotation from their earlier breakout moments. Add to that the pool of approximately 125 top end models currently circulating in the blue chip editorials and ads and it clear that the market keeps getting more and more crowded.
So who then stands a chance to be the next Lara, Natasha or Freja? Management and politics will decide and in all of that runway frenzy, the perverse power-brokers of the industry will always choose to home in on a stealth girl , who without benefit of runway traction or star-making opening slot will find herself booked to kingdom come. In this regard, meet Gertrud Hegelund, sister to Agnete and the girl with charts on fire. Whoever said this game was predictable?"
