The stunning frescoes in the 15th-century Salone dei Cinquecento in Florence’s Palazzo Vecchio served as a grand backdrop for Giambattista Valli’s pre-fall show held Thursday night, marking the designer’s return to his home country.

“I feel very much at ease in Paris, so Florence was a challenge,” said Rome native Valli during pre-show fittings. “I liked the idea of going back to Italy’s fashion roots because I was always fascinated by the Sala Bianca,” he continued, referring to Italy’s first location in the Sixties for runway shows in Palazzo Pitti, “and by the mystery and allure of Italian actresses from the past, such as Monica Vitti.” Valli was invited by Pitti Immagine, which organizes a women’s wear showcase focused on pre-collections. (It also invited Diane von Furstenberg to Florence for her 2009 resort show.) Guests included Luchino Visconti di Modrone, Delfina Delettrez Fendi, Margherita Missoni, Wanda Ferragamo, Donatella Girombelli and Laudomia Pucci.

Valli infused Florentine tradition into the clothes with Fifties-style looks in fine wools and cashmeres. The mostly black palette had dashes of ecclesiastical purple, tangerine and bronzed green. Outerwear was slim with slightly rounded shapes in back and often featured cropped trumpet sleeves, while shearling coats had a dégradé effect. Cocktail dresses, meanwhile, were slender and shapely with distinctive embellishments.

As for the future, Valli says he is focused on growing his company one step at the time, noting that he’s self-financed and self-managed, and that he hopes to open a flagship at some point. His line is carried in 220 doors in 35 countries. “I think this crisis will open a new era for everyone because it will reward those companies focused on quality [and] that didn’t dilute their brands,” said Valli.

Is that last dress supposed to be some kind of joke?!? Forget about flattering, I can deal with unflattering, but in what world is that even remotely beautiful, or better, EXPENSIVE looking. It looks like a 6 year old girl with a bright future as a Hot Topic customer dressed her Barbie up in wads of shredded up tulle.

Overall I've tired of Valli's aesthetic. He's become just as out of touch with contemporary women as Galliano at Dior has. I just don't think his overly-couturey, super fussy aesthetic makes sense anymore.

this feels so redundant.

it's not avant garde or appealing, it's just...overly "fashion" but representing the worst aspects of fashion- the overwrought, irrelevant, stiff and uncomfortable side.

bah.

I think though he had tried quite a couple of new things here, like the leopard prints and puffed cuffs, I still think it's in the context of giambattista's aesthetics.
Not as outstanding as his pret-a-porter collections, but it's still valli. And I love valli.

So, I might be a little bias here.

like the sleek balcks with pouffs. but the rest is questionable. i must say it's very giambatista valli tho...

This is another proof that he is best at doing cokctail dresses, because all of those coats are horrid. The shapes and materials, nothing works imo, but like i said some fantastic dresses as always.

There isn't one single look I like...or strongly dislike...It's that boring!

I love it.
I was disappointed by Valli's S/S 09 collection but I do love this.
The orange coat with puff sleeves being my favourite piece.
This isn't the entire collection - there are 52 pieces shown on style.
Valli's winters are always strong and so I'm looking forward to his 09-10 collection where I hope he'll try to do something different from the silhouette he has adopted that seems rather repetitious.

You can tell it's Valli right after the first sight, he's so predictable. The 4th coat looks really good, but that's all.

^ You're right, he is.
I really hope he changes that predictability for his winter collection.

Its not appealing to me. but why do i keep imaginng Michele Obama in some of these?
pics 1, 5, 9, 11 and 12

Even tho I find a lot of his stuff repetitive, I quite like a lot of these pieces. Especially the black fur coat in the second post.

I agree, none of these looks are appealing... not even on these not so sexy models...The only one I do like is the red pencil skirt and black mink coat, the rest= UG
