What a wonderful change for Julien Macdonald and Givenchy. Givenchy hasn't looked this good since McQueen. I was hoping for something more traditional, but slightly modern after seeing his couture collection and that's what was shown. He showed mostly in darker colors, black and white, rich browns and a hint of tan, red, orange and blue! I loved all the leather gloves and accessories and the oversize collars, like the ones shown at Balenciaga last fall. Here's what he said this collection was inspired by.

"She's a KGB spy living in Paris. She's a woman you see only in passing and only at night.”

oh I like it, it's nice  I waited till your review to see it  I like how you put in the quote there, I always wonder what the "woman" is of every collection and the inspirations and everything behind it!

Beautiful - I loved the touches of blue & red.

Oh Damn I LOVE IT!!! Laura this collection is making me want to be a SPY!

The Thomas Crown Affair!

I know you have to love those clothes, being my twin and all!

Captain Julien seems determined not to hear it said that Givenchy's "ship" sank with him at helm. Perhaps rumors of impending mutiny (though from the top) splashed the cold water with the realization that the LVMH powers-that-be want an image carved.

In my opinion, this collection shows that he's definitely on some path and that he really can be serious enough to tackle and meet their challenge. Still, he has yet to distinguish his idol even as he (unfortunately) appears to be veering away from "something still Julien" toward something... well, just more "blind". He's racing against time now as well since his current contract gives him three more chances (I think).

It's a good collection though... like a snapshot of a maturing designer. Tactically, I think he was very wise to show more sportswear in this collection.

Great collection for Julien! I am pleseantly surprised. The tailoring a sophistication of it is breath taking. Is it just me though or does anyone else see a slight glimpse of Balenciaga in the tailoring of the colars on some of those coats?

I must say I had my doubts about Julien but I think I am coming around to his possibilities. the last couple of collections I have seen by him have been very subdued and for lack of a better word professional. Did somebody tame him or was it the all mighty dollar?

I so agree! 8)

I think it was his Fall 2002 Couture which gave me the hint and the faith that his time perhaps was coming. I've always admired only pieces of his work while recognizing his potential. Recently however, although he's still cultivating originality, he's bringing me around to an appreciation of his "body of work" more.

You put it well. I think he's a bit tamed by the desire to fulfill his contract at least and to avoid LVMH's exercise of its boot option. And true... Ghesquière recently revived then dropped the "collar gauntlet" for sure, but the style did appear in several collections this season, among the most notable, at Gucci.
