In their latest video, Kenzo highlights its spring 2014 collection with a shimmering, surreal four-minute clip. Falling somewhere between a fashion film, music video, and narrative short, “Dawn in Luxor” unites director Khalil Joseph and hip hop collective Shabazz Palaces with the buzzy Paris- by-way-of-NYC brand. Scored by an otherworldly song off of Shabazz Palaces’ upcoming release, Lese Majesty, the short veers from barren beaches to scenes of model Grace Mahary—clad in Kenzo and gold nameplate earrings—working as a waitress at a small Jamaican fish joint. The ocean serves as a literal and symbolic backdrop for most of the film: a young boy sits reverently by the corpse of a beached dolphin, and in a sparse, almost cryptic exchange, Grace informs a customer, played by Shabazz Palaces’ Ishmael Butler, that the restaurant has no catch of the day. All of these ominous images tie back to the running theme of “No Fish No Nothing,” Kenzo’s Blue Marine Foundation-backed charity that served as the creative inspiration for their spring runway show.
