Harper’s Bazaar Australia September 2019 : Carolyn Murphy by Darren McDonald

I like the retro mood of this, but there's no way anyone would have let this pass on a cover in the 1990s. That face is forever, but no-one at the time would have approved this shot for the front of a magazine.

That said, the article sounds like it'll be refreshing.

Never mad about seeing Carolyn, but this cover leaves me cold. I'll look forward to reading her interview though.

The word icon is always related to old things. Get rid of models from past generations, this is our generation we want to see cool girls and boys of this time.

Young doesn’t make you cool neither being older or old makes you less cool than anyone else. It is all about who you are and I personally think Carolyn is super cool!

I didn't say that stop distorting my words. I said that it is time to show a new generation of cool people not that being old is not cool. So stop it!

They all f*cking suck. Worst model generation ever.

How do you know if all that we see is basically 90's supermodels since the late 80's? the only young people they show are those that have certain likes on Instagram (they're always the same) or the children of the same 1990's supermodels...

Distorting? Seriously. At least allow me to misunderstand them. That’s how I read them.

Carolyn Murphy is not some washed up has-been being dragged out of obscurity for nostalgia’s sake. She’s only 44 years old, for crying out loud. She’s still working and relevant and could teach some of the up-and-coming younger models a thing or two. Speaking as someone who’s in their 20s, I think she’s incredibly beautiful and substantive and I’m happy to see her and other models above age 30 on newsstands alongside plenty of “cool boys and girls of this time” who, in fact, get plenty of covers.

Unfortunately the image itself is an extremely odd and underwhelming choice for a cover, but that’s not her fault.

Another one that is trying so hard to victimize these models, because of my criticism. Girl, nobody said that CM is a talentless nobody. But she had her time as well as other 90's model that keep appearing all the time since 1987 and now are trend once again and moreover, her children are everywhere. This is fashion, we are always demanding new things if you see the same faces all the time it gets old and boring. Whatever you want to add, it was not said by me, so do not be unfair and imply it, please. Thank you.

But you keep reiterating the same basic point. In response to this Carolyn Murphy cover, you implied she was "old" and said "get rid of models from past generations". Then, when others defend Carolyn, you suggest they're distorting and misconstruing your comments. One of the positive changes in recent years is the acceptance within the fashion industry of models who are no longer in teens or young adults. And why not? It's a welcome change and reflects the actual world of people who consume fashion. Your post(s) also implied younger models are not getting work, but I disagree. Flip through any magazine's editorials, look at any magazine's social media accounts, look at ad campaigns and runway shows and yes, even newsstand covers and you will find plenty of popular and consistently employed young models. You can kvetch all you want about it, but the narrative that a handful of 90s supermodels are preventing younger generations from having their time in the sun simply isn't true.

I can't.... keep trying.

Good God, what ignorance. So in your opinion we should recycle models every what, two to three years? Why is that? Carolyn and other supermodels may have had their prime in the past but that doesn't mean they can't keep shining in the present.
I don't know what magazines you're reading but there are plenty of new faces and most of them forgettable. Why do you think we still remember Christy, Naomi, Linda, Kate, Carolyn, Amber and all of the models that came before? They left their mark. None of the new models were able to do that except for Vittoria, Fran, Kris, Rianne off the top of my head (in my opinion). And those models that make themselves memorable, those who are deserving of the spotlight do indeed book their gigs and we see them every month, every issue, every season. Why? Because they get. Work. Done. Vogue Ukraine and other foreign Vogues tried to go Kirsten Owen and Karen Elson route by putting random ''odd-looking'' new girls on covers and editorials but it just isn't working. They tried introducing the new standard of beauty so many times and in a way they did, by accepting certain shapes and including more colors but that's as far as this generation is gonna get. We don't have what it takes to make fashion great again so maybe the generation that's about to come will have more luck. We shall hope.

But to constantly read those ''tired of old models'' comments of yours is borderline offensive to those hard working women and you may defend yourself as much as you want but it doesn't hide the fact that there's a certain amount of disrespect and ageism going on. And personally, I'd rather get a different ''old'' model on the cover every following month instead of those forgettable new ''one season wonders''. So as all of us, you're obviously allowed to have an opinion and share it on the forum but why not try doing so with a little bit of respect? After all, they may be ''old'' but it takes a strong, hard working ICON to be relevant for 20 years after their prime. So let that sink in.

Honestly you find a way to interject this same tired opinion in every thread, and I'm glad people are calling you on it. You don't like models from the 90s, we get it, move on, find one of the million other threads with the as you put it "cool boys and girls" and comment there. Many of us find this generation to be blips on the radar without any staying power, but we don't go into every thread they are featured in and make that comment over and over.

Her “Sweet Carolyn” story is very solid. It’s 18 pages and includes a 1-page feature. The shoot is a combination of in-studio and on-location, and great to see Darren put in the effort to fully create a story-- unlike so many of the current crop of hyped lessers, with gorgeous seasonal styling and a strong mood. It reminds me a lot of those Craig McDean shoots from Liz’s Bazaar, but not at all nostalgic and still very fresh. Carolyn’s 45 and age ain’t nothing but a number… If any of these new girls were cast in this story, they likely wouldn’t be able to carry it— unless standing around looking vacant is what one wants to see in their fashion stories.

Australia Bazaar is miles ahead of their US-counterpart in the presentation department. It never looks cheap. Unfortunately, the pointless “Icons” shoot is also included— which looks so jarring next to the other stories. Not even Christy and Devon can save that mess. But thank goodness Carolyn gets the cover. It’s very much such a mood.

Who do you think you are to tell me what should I say or not? I have my own opinion and I am very happy and proud that is different from yours. Respect it.

Ok. I want to see 90's models forever. Are you happy now? Sorry for being so ignorant and such a bad person. And for the record, although Rianne is young I think she is boring.
