Helena Christensen Exhibition
HELENA CHRISTENSEN / A QUIET STORY
"In modeling, there is no point in trying to prove you have a brain, so why even bother? I'd sooner save the energy for something more meaningful."
Helena Christensen
Supermodel Helena Christensen presented her exhibition of photographic works on November 30 in Rotterdam in which she clearly proves to be talented both in front of and behind the camera. The exhibition shows 135 works consisting of self-portraits, celebrity portraiture, still-lives and fashion. A poetic, sometimes even voyeuristic, look into the mind of the 1990’s supermodel.
While most of her colleagues chose to launch perfumes, lingerie, records or other paraphernalia, Christensen followed her passion for art.
Born on Christmas day in 1968 to a Danish father and Peruvian mother, Helena grew up in Denmark. Helena left her home for Paris at the age of 18 to pursue a modeling career. She caught the eye of fashion photographer Peter Lindbergh who quickly shot her for the cover of English VOGUE. Karl Lagerfeld took her under his wing and soon she was fronting Chanel and Karl Lagerfeld ads. This led on to a long solid career working with many of the most talented photographers and designers in the business. Christensen became one of the leading supermodels of the 1990’s has appeared in numerous editorials and advertising campaigns, and did a huge amount of runway shows.
In addition to these more traditional modeling opportunities, Helena has also worked in various film and television projects. These include the 1992 independent film Inferno, feature film Prêt à Porter and Chris Isaak's hit music video Wicked Game. The BBC arts-channel has made a documentary about her and she recently starred with a leading role in the Danish art film Allegro.
In 1997 Helena co-founded NYLON magazine and at the same time worked as creative director, photographer and journalist for the magazine. She had a son in 1999 and went on to become a freelance photographer. From then on her photography career really took off working for numerous international magazines and campaigns.
