I used the search feature here and didn't find anything that was about this specifically

But anyway, what's the consensus on these DIY highlighting kits i.e. herbal essences highlighting kit? I heard some horror stories about that in particular but I believe they have a new applicator now... And there are other brands available but I haven't heard much about them and how effective they are.

I am asking because I WANT to get highlights but the salon prices are a bit too pricey for me (me, being a uni student who's unemployed and so in debt) and I'd likely have to get it touched up or re-done when my hair grows out, or else it would just look a bit odd. So the economic factor is a big one.

However, if these DIY kits will mess up my hair and I will have weird chunks of color in my hair, I think I'll just pass altogether on this.

Thanks in advance.

These are the worst-seriously. I let my BF do this to me last year sometime and it was horrible. There is no way that one of this kits can give you good hightlights. My hair was blonde to begin with and I ended up with leopard spots of white  all over my scalp and the back of my hair. I tried to fix it myself but I ended up at the the salon where it took over three hours and 200 bucks to fix. She had to re-hightlight to hide the spots and put another color all over to soften everything. If you really want hightlights, go to a salon. I did it on a whim- never again. . . :innocent:

Ohhh thanks for the heads up!

Okay, I guess it's salon job or no highlights at all.

And man, those herbal essences "streaking party" commercials are just advertisement then...

No matter how meticulous you are, or how much time you spend, it always seems to come out choppy and just over all bad

Dont use 'em. my "highlights" ended up dying my whole head. :(

I recently posted a thread called growing hair out brown to blonde and was advised for in the process of it growing out, so that my roots didn't look so bad, to add some highlights!

I can't afford for a hairdresser to do it at the moment, so i was wondering if any of you knew of some good hair highlighting kits i could buy and use myself?

My hair at the moment is medium brown and my natural colour is around medium blonde, so if anyone could suggest a colour highlight aswell that would be great!

Thanks in advance :flower:

Although I can't recommend any "at home" solutions (I honestly have never tried any) you might want to check your local salons for "training" days. I've noticed that many upscale salons offer discounts on certain days with their "junior stylists." :flower:

Yeah, i'll look into that one infact i think my friend is doing a hairdressing course at college, she mentioned me being able to go there for it free but i don't know whether or not to trust her lol!
Thanks:flower:
