It's no secret: PAPERMAG –- okay, specifically
Mr. Mickey and I -– are utterly smitten with refined English Rose
Imogen Morris-Clarke! We were one of the first to hop on the Imogen bandwagon in Summer 2007 upon stumbling across
Louis Park's super kawaii
Vogue Girl spreads and initially
proclaimed our intrigue during her illustrious Spring 2009 début Fashion Week: apparantly sparking a trend, considering a mere seven days later the
New York Magazine team also
caught the drift of her ebullient grace and fetching wit. However we're hardly alone in our Imogen endearment; in fact while sharing a car today from the
Philosophy di Alberta Ferretti presentation to the
Narcisco Rodriguez show with a very prominent fashion magazine editor, the entire ride's confab pertained to his rigamarole booking the in-demand Miss Morris-Clarke. Although her heartfelt aspirations may be to become an actor or writer, Imogen has already scored the superlative S/S campaigns of D&G, Miu Miu (alongside Katie Holmes and recent papermag
interviewee -– and her close amie –-
Katie Fogarty), and Topshop (accompanying last week's chit-chatee [link] Constance Jablonski). We have already witnessed Imogen's kittenish carriage
en personne this week at the likes of
Carolina Herrera, Altuzarra, United Bamboo, DKNY, Jill Stuart, Barbie, Verrier, Jason Wu, and BCBG and caught up with the ladylike Londoner backstage at
Erin Fetherston for the down-low on the hardest-hitting of issues: namely performing crazy acrobatics to scare people
dans le métro and the important role of flour in muffin-baking!
What makes you laugh uncontrollably?
The things that make me laugh are always the most obscure: like something weird that I see or a stupid joke between friends. I always get the giggles at the most inappropriate of times...
This week marks the opening of Chadwick Tyler's acclaimed (and stunningly ethereal) gallery exhibition, Tiberius; can you share with us a bit about your experience shooting the "farm kid" dust bowl-esque series?
I love shooting with Chadwick because there is this unspoken energy between the whole team. I was made up with
dirt on my face and he told that me I looked a bit like Oliver Twist, then we just took it from there! The great thing about that shoot was that there were no boundaries –- at one point , I was eating dead flowers!
When did you first know that you wanted to be a model?
Actually, I wanted to be an actress!
Do you ever become homesick while traveling? Do you bring any mementos or keepsakes from home with you?
I miss London and my friends and family dearly, but I talk to them a lot on the phone which helps me cope. And I have this gold key chain necklace of tremendous sentimental value that I bought in London for 50 pence that I wear everywhere.
What is the greatest number of castings/go-sees that you have undertaken in one day?
I think the record was somewhere between 20-25. It certainly guarantees a great night's sleep!
Any fun Fashion Week anecdotes or stories thus far?
This season I really have to work on my organizational skills: this week alone I've left my phone, necklace, jacket, scarf and heels all around the city. At one point I even had to borrow another girl's heels that she threw to me just prior to stepping into the casting!
What is the most stressful aspect of castings? And the best part?
For me, the most stressful aspect is making it there on time. The best part is when a designer or casting director responds well to you or you make a real connection with someone.
Your recently released Ben Toms and Jean-Baptiste Mondino editorials have garnered rave reviews; how do you personally communicate the photographer's vision through the images?
I try to get a feel for what the photographer is seeking: whether that is through talking to them or looking through and researching their past work. Each photographer has a completely different style and I just try to incorporate that vision through my movement and expression.
What are your hobbies or otherwise hidden talents that may surprise people?
Well I mentioned that I love acting, but something else that I did a lot when I was growing up was soccer... I was such a tomboy! Oh I also have strangely double-jointed legs and can bend them around each other. I often do it to scare people on the subway!
While traveling abroad, what do you like to do in new cities? Where are your favorite places to shop in the fashion capitals?
In new cities, I like going to the local traditions as opposed to the overpopulated tourist areas. Food and clothing markets are a favourite, as well as old buildings or a city's unique metropolitan features. My favourite place to shop is on Brick Lane in [my hometown of] London... but I also love New York and the boutiques in Paris.
How would you describe your personal style?
Very mixed. At home I tend to wear biker boots, oversized T-shirts, dresses, and the like; however for modeling its a simpler version of that -– with a LOT of black and grey. Can't go wrong with black!
What are your last thoughts prior to stepping out onto the runway?
My mind goes completely blank.
Which (current or former) model do you think has the fiercest runway strut?
Carmen Kass is amazing. I also love Jourdan Dunn's walk: she always looks so fierce yet beautiful on the runway.
What do you consider to be your "big break"?
The
Spring/Summer 2009 shows. It was my first season and before that I had merely done test shoots in London.
What have you learned about yourself from the modeling industry?
That you can't please everyone or be what everyone is looking for... you can only do your best. I feel extremely lucky to be working with such creative and talented people –- so I just take everything as it comes instead of trying to read too deeply into anything.
How do you keep yourself entertained backstage?
I hang out with other girls –- chatting or taking pictures. Sometimes I bring a book to read or some schoolwork... although I can't say that the latter is very entertaining!
How do you maintain your radiant complexion? Do you have a specific beauty ritual?
Not really. Same as most girls, plenty of water and sleep is essential. My skin also gets very dry so I use a simple moisturizer once or twice a day.
What is your favorite meal of the day? How would you rate your cooking ability?
So hard to choose! I love breakfast but am never very hungry that early in the morning. Lunch is probably my favorite. As for cooking, I'm appalling! I make flubs like making muffins and forgetting to put in any flour.
Who do you trust more than anyone else?
My mum and my friends.
What are your absolute favorite fashion magazines?
V,
Vogue Paris,
i-D,
Vogue Italia, and
Dazed & Confused.
...Designers?
So hard to choose! At the moment I love
Phillip Lim; his 3.1 clothes are really beautiful yet functional.
What is your favorite fairy tale, and why?
Snow White. It was the first play that I acted in when I was five years old. I think I was a dwarf.
What do you consider to be your greatest achievement thus far?
In life: Maintaining a clear perspective and keeping my priorities in order. In modeling: It is yet to be released!
