Norwegian model, Iselin Steiro, has walked the runway for the world’s most respected designers and has been cast in dozens of campaigns. Her latest task? Playing a young David Bowie in “The Stars (Are Out Tonight)” music video. We picked the models brain on what it was like to play the icon and how androgyny fits into her everyday life.
What was it like depicting a young David Bowie?
Depicting a young Bowie is definitely the most challenging and exciting task I have had as a model. I studied all music videos and interviews I could find on YouTube, and aimed for the right attitude as best as I could. I love playing characters, but I must say it was quite surreal to try to imitate a person that was actually on set! I have a lot of respect for David Bowie as an artist, and I felt honored to play the young musician in the video.
How do you feel he has influenced and inspired the world of fashion?
David Bowie played a groundbreaking role in the world of fashion, I think he freed the “freaks” and the people that felt constrained by the rules and conventions in the 60′s. The way he dressed still inspires designers and people to think for themselves about what clothes and style can really be. Radical, androgynous and originality is sexy and cool, and fashion needs that to move forward and to challenge peoples conception of style.
Have you always been a fan of his?
Yes, and when I was researching for the shoot I discovered so much more of his music and his amazing story, so I’m an even bigger fan now.
What designers do you think best depict androgyny as a trend?
I think a lot of designers have elements of androgyny these days. Personally, I love Céline’s big pants, shirts and coats, Alexander Wang has done some amazing flat shoes and oversized sweaters and Maison Martin Margiela certainly challenges all conceptions of gender and clothes in general!
In your own personal style, do you tend to gravitate towards a more androgynous look?
I definitely tend towards an androgynous look, especially when it comes to my every day style. I wear mens shirts a lot, flats and mens jeans from A.P.C. I often feel more sexy in men’s clothes than women’s, but I love to put on heels and dresses sometimes too!
What are some androgynous pieces you currently like wearing?
These days I wear an A.P.C. jean that I took from my husband, my favorite Adidas “racer” sneakers and shirts from Acne.
