An alchemist of hair; James Rowe's obsession was sparked as he sat in a Peak District salon watching his hairdresser mum at work. Fast-forward 17 years and his wizardry with hair is ranked amongst the fashion world elite.
James' talent was first spotlighted when he worked in London for Vidal Sassoon where he was spied by Eugene Souleiman, who subsequently took James on as his 1st assistant. Now fashion's heavyweight fold of photographers such as David Bailey, Ellen Von Unwerth, Horst Diekgerdes and Paolo Roversi call upon James to work within their creative teams.
The early days of avidly experimenting on friends' and family's hair are now replaced working on the glamorous tresses of Alexa Chung, Claudia Schiffer, Emma Watson, Stella McCartney and Liv Tyler for cover shoots. Or on main fashion, creating striking imagery, for prized magazine titles such as Another, Dazed & Confused, i-D, Vanity Fair and Vogue UK.
Hairdressing's grass roots still figure in James' life as he colludes with big brands in the creation of hair products. Plus his whirring rolladex of a brain, that is brimming with hair imagery and influences, is now being poured out over the pages of a hair manual that he is compiling.
James Rowe's ability to meld the magical and commercial is why he is commissioned by brands like Marni, Lanvin, Calvin Klein, Richard Nicoll and Paul Costello.
