There can be no better muse for the sort of androgyny pioneered by Coco Chanel — tweed plus-fours, Fair Isle sweaters and skinny jackets — than the American model Jamie Bochert. At 32, she has also worked for Marc Jacobs, Givenchy and Lanvin. She is a talented musician, too, in a band called Frances Wolf that once played back-up for Patti Smith (her style crush) at a concert in Paris.
Her dark-eyed, haunting beauty and cheeks like isosceles triangles mark her out from other models. She loves black and says that her style of dressing doesn’t differ enormously whether she’s on or off the stage.‘I love that masculine/ feminine thing of mixing a suit jacket with my own trousers and heels, and the timeless, classic design that Coco created. It’s very authentic and at times eccentric, which is why the Chanel legacy has endured.’ Bochert looks sensational in skinny black trousers, a voluminous cropped jacket and black boots.
How does she find working with Karl?
‘Where do I begin? I’m staggered by how much he knows. He seems to know everything about art and history and I always learn something new every time I work with him. He has really influenced my work and inspired my writing. He gave me this book by Catherine Pozzi, his favourite poet, and we’re discussing turning it into a film.’
