Up and coming actor Jamie Campbell, who plays Caius in New Moon, the new instalment in the Twilight Saga, hit the Sitges Festival like a storm this past weekend, although he candidly admitted to us not to be ready for such a big phenomenon as Twilight.
At 20 Jamie Campbell is already idolized and can boast about having worked in Tim Burton’s Sweeney Todd and Guy Ritchie’s RocknRolla.
He can also boast about being part of two major movie franchises, besides his role of Caius in New Moon, he will also play young Grindelwald in the first instalment of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.
He agreed to talk to Que! about his career, his work in New Moon and the worldwide phenomenon that is Twilight.
- Did you ever imagine when you took on the role of Caius that your life would change so much?
-It’s been a huge surprise. I couldn’t imagine something like this; it’s been incredible
-Are you ready to face the massive fan phenomenon that comes with being part of Twilight?
-I’m not ready at all; I’ll just take it as it comes. As a matter of fact, I don’t consider myself a celebrity so I don’t understand everything that’s going on. It’s an honour that people want to have their photos taken with me, or want my autograph, but it’s still incomprehensible to me.
-What can you tell us about being part of Harry Potter?
-I’m very excited about it. My character is young Grindelwald and the only thing I can tell you is that he does something really bad and he also steals something.
-Did you watch many vampire movies to prepare for your character in New Moon?
-I really like vampire movies, but I didn’t watch any to prepare for the character. I did read all the books however, and also surfed the web to see what was the fan’s take on Caius.
-Why did you think you got the part?
-I worked hard, did a great casting and gave them what they were looking for.
-Would you change any of your past performances?
-Nothing. If my acting was great from the start I wouldn’t have been able to better myself.
-What’s your best trait as an actor?
-My hair (laughs)
-How was your experience working with Tim Burton?
-Tim Burton is a genius. It was incredible working with him; he has a brilliant mind. It was my first acting role and I was scared, but he made the experience better.
-How about Johnny Depp?
-He’s very charming and kind. It was a pleasure working with him and it was amazing seeing him work.
-What projects do you have in the near future?
-I’m working on a TV programme called “The Prisoner”, which starts on November 15th. I also just finished shooting “London Boulevard”, with Colin Farrell and Keira Knightley.
-Do you follow what is written about you in blogs or Internet?
-I don’t really follow what’s written about me on the net. I’m not really aware of what’s happening nor do I want to become obsessed with it. What I do have is a Twitter account.
-What do you like to do in your free time?
-I love playing music, pop-rock and also spend time with friends.
-What would you tell someone who doesn’t know what Twilight is about to convince them to watch the movies?
-That it really is a fantastic love story with vampires, something that to date has proven to be successful.
