How One Drama Student Went From Doing Homework to Walking Resort’s Biggest Shows

This time last year, Janaye Furman was just another college student. At the American Musical Dramatic Academy in Los Angeles, Furman was reading up on Stanislavski and taking in performances by fellow students. After being tapped on the shoulder by a scout while watching her friends onstage, Furman was drawn into the world of fashion, and has quickly risen through the ranks, making a splash with a debut at Proenza Schouler’s Fall 2017 show, posing for Patrick Demarchelier, and joining the Vuitton gang for the brand’s Cruise show in Kyoto.

The Altadena, California native grew up with dreams of performing, and studied guitar, violin, flute, and piano as a child. Now, at 21, she’s found that her love of creative expression doesn’t need to be confined to a single art form. Here, she shares her view on her meteoric rise, and why she’s still eager to make her way to the big screen.

On fashion as art form
“It’s surprising to see how specific designers and makeup artists are. It could be a tag that's just a tiny bit too long or the slightest touch of the face that makes such a difference. It was incredible for me to just watch [Proenza Schouler designers] Jack and Lazaro come out at the end of the show as I left the runway and know that I was a part of their art.”

On making friends behind the scenes
“There have been a couple of people who I’ve been really excited to see or meet backstage. With Proenza, it was Lineisy [Montero]. I’ve always thought she was adorable, and I could connect with her because of her hair. Then at LV it was Mica [Argañaraz], who is just so nice and really laid-back.”

On her Resort picks
“I loved the jacket I wore at Proenza; it was my first show and it made me feel so major, as people say. The coats that Selena Forrest and I wore [at Louis Vuitton] were so unique. I feel like I would wear that, the whole outfit and the heels! Inside, underneath the jacket, it was this button-down shirt that was also beautiful with these sleeves that were folded up with a stripe down the middle. The way designers can take something simple like a button-down shirt and turn it into something extraordinary is amazing to me. If someone just randomly bought me anything from that collection, I would love it.”

On her rapid rise
“Everything has been surprising, and I feel like I’ve learned a lot along the way. I thought [modeling] would be more planned, but it’s not. One day, you just wake up, and you’re like, ‘Hey, you’re on option for this,’ or, ‘Hey, you might be going to Japan,’ and everything goes by very fast. I can’t believe that it’s been only since January, because so much has been packed in, but even though it feels like it’s been a long time, it also feels like everything goes by so quickly.”

On her first trip to Japan
“At first, I couldn’t wrap my head around going to Japan, because I’d never thought of it being an option. It wasn’t until the show started that it really hit me, but the experience was incredible. We did karaoke, had a lovely dinner together, and got to explore Kyoto—plus all those talking toilets were really funny.”

On her first love
“Acting is really my first love. In the future, I plan on pursuing it and doing some television or movies if I can. My dream role would be playing a sexy action hero or spy. Something where [the character] has a shining moment and can help the hero—or she is the hero! I’m waiting for Wonder Woman to come out, because I’m excited about all the female roles that are out there now.”

On taking her artistry seriously
“I believe that it’s important to treasure what you can bring to the world, because no one else will care as much [as you do]. My art is what I have control over, and it doesn’t have to fit into someone else’s mold. It’s whatever I imagine.”
