Japanese Elle (Elle Japon) cover retrospective

The October 2009 issue saw Elle Japon celebrate their 300th edition, and as part of that, they published some pages showing a mix of previous cover shots (mofazu.com

Here are two more pages from that section (same source) showing a small image of their first ever issue, and tallying which supermodel has appeared most often on the front. Claudia wins with 12 covers, while Helena has 7, and Christy has 6. The second page shows the most popular musicians and actresses as cover choices.

Elle Japon came out twice monthly during the 80's. I have many issues that my Mom collected during that time. Absolutely beautiful and so much better than what they published from the late 90's up to today.

Strangely, the article seems to think the magazine started in 1989. Yet there we have an image of an issue from 1982, and MMA talks of the magazine coming out twice-monthly during that decade.

After some online reasearch, I see that someone has made a database of issues, where it seems one 'run' of Elle Japon came to an end in June 1989, and then the magazine was renumbered to start again with the July 1989 Roberta Chirko issue:

I did a bit of digging myself & it turns out that Elle Japon goes back a bit further... to 1980 when it was first introduced as part of an-an magazine.

This was also a great mag... very French inspired during the 80's. an-an is still published but IMO it's not of the quality it used to be.

There was another 80's Japanese magazine Clique which was very Elle-ish and really quite good. Carine Roitfeld did some styling for them. Again.. very French inspired. It's no longer being published though.
