Jean-Michel Folon is a Belgium artist, born on march 1st 1934 at Uccle and died on october 20th 2005 at Monaco. He worked on many materials and designed for various supports :tapestry, painting, stamp, theatre setting, etc.
He trained as an architect, but give up his studies at Ecole Saint-Luc in the middle of the 60’s
and settled in paris. Very quickly he distinguished in the domain of illustration with a style which is caracterized by wide gradation watercolors and the recuring use of characters with volontarily simplified outlines. Those expressionless faces characters, weightlessly wandering in vast deserted landscapes or in enigmatics and oppressives urbans ones, are probably the best aspect of his work.

He collaborated on « Lily aime-moi », Maurice Dugowson’s first movie in which he played with good friends such as Patrick Dewaere or Rufus.Attracted by movie player career, he abandonned this project listening to Gerard Depardieu’s advice who sayed that Folon was more creative as a painter than as an actor.
However in 1975, he played in Michel Vianey's movie « Un homme comme moi ne devrait jamais mourir »(A man like me should never have to die)
With the music composer Michel Colombier, he designed the opening and closing for « Antenne 2 » channel.Broadcasted from 1975 to 1984, and where characters were flying away on a very melancolic cantilena for oboe and orchestra. Probably his best wellknown work.
1989 was a public success in France : he designed the logo for the Paris International phitatelic exhibition, Philexfrance 89 and the logo of « birds » which were the symbols of the commemoration of the french revolution on many stamps and goods.
He was also an ardent defender of Human Rights, and illustrated for Amnesty International.
