Although there are no new ideas here, much like the rest of the NY shows - this collection is surprisingly well tailored. She got a lot of things right - the dark, metallic and neutral colours that look luxurious and not washed out, the cut is superb, very simple and flattering, a very subtle sexiness. It fits right in with the formal "blacktie" vibe without being fussy or over-embellished. Very grown up and supercool.

This is my favourite dress of the whole collection:

I like the dark slinkiness of some pieces. thanks Zazie!

love hair and make up too much..
need to see more, but this could be excellent in 'fake blacks'
the all black makes it a bit too safe and last season..

some dresses are really great, and the make-up is just amazing!

Runway review from Style.com:

NEW YORK, February 6, 2006 – Jill Stuart's fall collection marked a change in direction, with some looks suggesting a new horizon, and a few others pointing toward a dead end. From the cossack-collared trapeze coat that opened the show—and the black-clad rocker girls who followed—there was an air of London cool that swept down the runway, erasing any thought of Stuart's usual sugary, ornamental fare. Instead the emphasis was on long and lean: great coats and sweeping skirts slit up the front and worn with blouson-sleeve blouses for an equestrienne-meets-goth vibe, and skinny black jeans, beaded vests, and a mouse-print minidress that seemed to be cut with the young and slender in mind.

Stuart was trying to push the envelope, but she still wants to cater to a wide audience; for every downtown look—such as the Dior-esque black-and-silver-striped minidress with matching scarf—there was something safer, like the bare-backed jersey gowns which were vying for a spot on the charity gala circuit.

The designer mostly achieved her aim of making this collection "cleaned up and modern," but with a show comprising 50 looks, there was certainly room to edit: There were too many Empire and thirties-inspired dresses, and some of them just looked like vintage redone. Yes, there was a sense that Stuart is more clued in to how young women dress today, but the designer hasn't entirely abandoned the past.

I love the makeup, well maybe they could have made the countouring a bit less heavy...

the clothes are VERY boring... ..but better than usual....

Thanks for the review.:flower: The pictures up on Getty were probably of the cool "London" vibe pieces. Glad I didn't have to go through the 50 other vintage 30s looks. I'm not really familiar with Jill Stuart - she didn't seem to interest me before, but if it's true she used to do "sugary ornamental fare", oh wow, what a change. Yes, it is not pushing envelopes, and black is safe. I'd wear some of these as very nice basics, and a welcomed change from the "bubbles" and volume.:) I'm glad she didn't take that road; although it can be chic and cute, it is very difficult to get the proportions right and can look crude next to the "real thing" by the designer houses. I understand that her clothes are quite affordable, no? I'd be looking carefully to see if they are worth it up close for some "classics". I'll look out for the full collection, and if there are other interesting pieces, I'll post.:)

^ I think "safe" is the right word for this collection... ;) but it's too safe and then it's trying to be cutting edge (the dangerous neckline in the first pic of this thread) but its just not working!

Split personality

I checked out the entire collection. It was as if there were two designers, it's quite schizo, the black, sleek, long vamps struting alongside what must have been remnants of what Jill Stuart must have been in the past...heh...like these:

 wait until you see the entire thing on style.com... there's stuff much worse in that show....

To be fair, there were more slinky cool clothes than the dowdy beige and white ones in this collection. I think my main fascination is how the flowy, loose cut flatters and lengthens the models' figure without going the tight-sexy-Posh route. Here's more:
