Jocelyn Chew Talks About 'The Face,' Modeling And Team Naomi

LISA MCGRATH MARCH 12, 2013

Jocelyn Chew, the 20-year-old half Chinese/half Icelandic beauty hailing from Canada, is one of the few remaining contestants competing on Oxygen's modeling competition series The Face. The series, hosted by Nigel Barker (formerly of America's Next Top Model), follows supermodel coaches Naomi Campbell, Karolina Kurkova and Coco Rocha as their models compete for the chance to become the new face of ULTA Beauty.

I recently caught up with Jocelyn to learn more about her background in modeling, what it's like to work with Naomi Campbell and - more importantly - what's behind her love of sharks.

What inspired you to get into modeling?
I think from a young age I've always been interested in fashion and the magazines. By always just looking at them and the models and everything, I kind of just inspired myself.

What was your first big break or a job that made you really want to pursue modeling as a career?
When I first started modeling I shot for Seventeen magazine. I remember it being a publication that also comes out in Canada (where I'm from) and all my friends and family saw it and it was just like a really cool, inspiring moment that makes you want to push further.

How does it feel to be a part of the contestants on The Face?
It's an honor to be a part of the contestants on The Face, especially being on Team Naomi and also being on the first season. It's an experience that you get to have first hand as the first group of people.

It seems like you've really hit it off with Naomi [Campbell]. What's it like having her as a mentor?
At first it was very intimidating because she's just an intimidating person but once I got to know her it was like a breeze. She's very motherly and genuine so being with her and learning from her was, for one, so inspirational and two a good experience that I could never have imagined I would be doing.

Team Naomi currently has three wins in a row. How does that feel midway through the competition?
It feels really good to have secured three wins, especially in a row and midway into the competition, but at the same time it keeps you on your toes because you know you have to keep performing really well. Everybody knows that at the moment you're the one to beat so you really need to step it up and keep giving it your all.

What can you tell us about this week's upcoming episode?
This coming week we're doing a campaign where we shoot a short video selling a product. We have to work in teams and choose a product as a team in order to sell it on camera and make everyone want to buy it. (In this week's episode, Jocelyn's team has Louboutin.)

What do you hope to take away from your experience on The Face?
The main thing that I hope to take away from my experience on The Face is just all the advice, especially from Naomi, her being my coach, but also from every mentor and even Nigel [Barker], taking away every tip and every trick and every just little piece of information that they've given to us during the time of filming the show. I think it's really important to remember everything and really take it to heart and use it in my career.

On another note, more on a personal level, you might take the cake for the best Twitter handle (@jocechewbacca). Are you a Star Wars fan at all?
[Laughs] Well my last name is Chew which is kind of random and I knew the Chewbacca character. I do have a Chewbacca backpack that kind of like when you wear it looks like he's piggybacking you, so yeah, I'd say so.

I know you're a big fan of sharks, where did that come from?
I've always been a big fan of sharks and animals in general. I'm a really big animal lover. I'm a vegetarian - "Fish are friends not food" - but the sharks thing kind of came from a nickname that everyone kind of called me (Jaws) and it kind of stemmed from that. And also Finding Nemo was an inspirational shark movie [laughs].

Besides modeling, what are your other passions and what are you really interested in?
Besides modeling my other passions would be fashion, for one, as a whole. I like the entire industry like whether it's planning for a magazine, being a stylist for a magazine, even photographers and everything - I just love the artistic nature of the fashion industry and how you can be creative in any career that you have in the fashion industry. You can be creative writing, taking photographs, being photographed, being a make-up artist, being a stylist. I think it's a free industry and I like that alot. I like the non-structure of it and the ability to create.

I see that you're from Canada. What do you consider to be the biggest difference or adjustment you've had to make between Canada and the US?
I think the biggest adjustment I had to make - and I'm still trying to make - is when I say stuff like "Eh" or "Sorry" or "About." [Laughs] It sounds like I'm not saying it properly. Probably my Canadian accent.

Is there anything else you'd like to share or anything you'd like to say to the readers?
I think that they just better be Team Naomi and tune in every Tuesday!

Jocelyn Chew Dishes on 'The Face,' Working with Naomi Campbell, and Her Feud with Sandra
By Jill Slattery on March 18, 2013

'The Face' (Steve Fenn, Oxygen Network).
Jocelyn Chew has made a serious impression this season on The Face, Oxygen's new modeling reality series that follows supermodel coaches Naomi Campbell, Karolina Kurkova, and Coco Rocha as their models compete for the chance to become the new face of ULTA Beauty.

The 20-year-old half Chinese/half Icelandic model from Canada caught mentor Naomi Campbell's eye early in the competition, thanks to her unique beauty and fierce posing skills. She's already advanced to the Top 6 and looks poised to take the fashion industry by storm after the show.

Zimbio recently caught up with Chew, who dished on working with Campbell, her reality TV competition strategy, and how she really feels about on-screen nemesis Sandra.

Were you nervous to meet Naomi Campbell and to be put on her team?
I was nervous, for sure, to first meet Naomi. But at the same time, I was excited because it's not every day that you get to meet someone so iconic. So I would say nervous and excited. A mixture of both.

She has a reputation of being a diva. What was your experience of working with her and being mentored by her?
My experience was a good experience. I don't think that Naomi's necessarily a diva. To me it's just like she knows what she wants and she knows how it should be, and I think that she doesn't beat around the bush with her critiques. She'd rather just be direct instead of wasting time on trying to sugarcoat things.

Do you feel like you've learned a lot from her and from the other judges?
I definitely feel like I've learned quite a few things. Especially with Naomi being my mentor, but all the coaches and Nigel as well are always telling us little things. And if you're paying attention you'll take notes.

If you had to name the one most important thing you've learned from Naomi Campbell, what would it be?
I would say all the walking advice she gave. I mean, she's the queen of the catwalk so there's no one to better teach you... It's something that I haven't done as much of in my career, so it was something that I was excited to be taught be Naomi but at the same time nervous because she's like the ultimate judge.

Did you have a strategy coming into the competition?
I would say my strategy was to stay confident and positive. And to just focus on myself and not the other competition... At the end of the day, I'm a really big believer in not comparing yourself to anybody, especially in the modeling industry. Because everybody is so different, if you keep comparing yourself to someone else that's all you're going to think about and you're just going to drive yourself crazy. So I really just tried to focus on myself.

Have there been any challenges so far that were harder than you thought they would be?
I think just all around, as a whole, every challenge is a little bit more challenging than I thought it would be because of it being a TV show and how many people are in the room and watching. It's not something I'm used to so I think it makes you a little bit nervous with all the extra eyes.

You were at odds with Sandra throughout the season. Do you think that's been accurately portrayed or was there some editing that made it seem bigger than it was at the time?
I do feel like it's fairly accurate. I mean, it's hard to put everything that happens in a 45 minute show — the whole show would be Sandra and I. [laughs] We just have very different, clashing, strong personalities and I think everybody realizes that.

Outside of modeling, what are your other passions?
I like extreme sports! I definitely like going on adventures and trying new things. And traveling. One of my favorite things that I've always liked to do and want to keep doing is culturing myself — visiting different countries and doing different things. I never like to be doing the same thing.

What's your favorite place that you've been to so far?
It's so hard to choose one place because I like everywhere for so many different reasons. But I'd probably have to say Ibiza. It's amazing.

How would you describe your own personal style?
I definitely don't have one specific trend that I'll always stick to. I think that I kind of mix everything, but mainly I stick to basics but basics looking kind of trendy and chic. Like layers and scarves.

Any fashion trend you could never ever see yourself trying?
Crocs. [laughs] And probably glasses with no lenses in them. I mean, you're obviously not blind and I don't understand why your glasses don't have lenses in them.

Any favorite designers that you'd love to work with?
I mean, I would love to work with any major designer. But I would have to say Alexander McQueen even though he's no around. But his clothing is still amazing. The structure of the dresses and the colors that he uses… he's just very outside of the box. It's very outside of the box and it's different, but at the same time whenever you see something by him you know it was Alexander McQueen. I love that you can always tell what's his.

Modern Woman: Jocelyn Chew

The 21st century girl doesn’t pertain to any stereotype. She’s a chick of many talents, one moment she’s in Europe, the next she’s in Asia. She’s working on several artistic projects at once and killing at every single one. She’s a mix of races – picking up different cultures as she travels. She’s the mysterious girl at the party you want to know her life story who everyone has their eyes on. Here we have sat down and chatted for you.

Talk about an international model, Jocelyn Chew has modelled around the world since the age of 16 living in Singapore, Hong Kong, and Greece. Eventually she moved to USA, where she currently resides in NYC. She grew up in Canada and is half Chinese half Icelandic. Since then has been on The Face. Yes, Naomi Campbell mentored her. The show, which airs on Oxygen, is hosted by Nigel Barker, who was a previous judge on America’s Next Top Model for seventeen seasons. She has modelled for American Eagle, GQ, and O’Neill to name a few. Just before leaving to her next adventure, she meets up with Lauren Engel in Central Park. Makeup by Malika Belfor.

How were you scouted when you were 16 and quickly turned into an international model working around the globe?
I was always interested in fashion and the industry at a young age. Some friends and family had mentioned that I should try modeling. I decided to give it a shot and start my way into the modeling world!

You spoke in interviews previously you like to do extreme sports, which ones do you like best?
I love extreme sports! Or anything with an adrenaline rush. I think that’s the best feeling ever. One of my favorite things I’ve done is sky dive with the red bulls guys. We did maybe 10 backflips in a row right out of the plane. It was amazing.

Your favorite city is Ibiza–what do you love most about it?
I love Ibiza because I love the energy. I actually just got back from my yearly trip there last week. For the first time I rented a scooter and rode around the island, it was so much fun! I like that in Ibiza you can party with your friends and have fun, but also relax on the beach or go out on a boat.

Did you feel your modeling career definitely propel after being on The Face?
I feel that being on the The Face helped my career. I didn’t have anything massive come out of it, but it definitely helped put my name out there more.

Do you think you would be where you are now had you not been on the show?
I think I would be where I am even if I had not done the show. I’m a very determined person, and when I set goals for myself I’ll do anything to accomplish them.

Do you think being on The Face is an accurate representation of the modeling industry?
There were aspects of the show that represented the modeling industry properly, but there was also other parts that did not. At the end of the day it is a reality television show, there was a lot of drama that you wouldn’t normally have in the normal modeling industry.

You spoke in previous interviews that you like the different facets of the fashion industry – after your modeling career do you see yourself being a stylist/photographer/ art director?
After my modeling career I definitely want to stay in the fashion industry. I love photography, and I think that’s something I want to get into more. Sometimes models are amazing photographers because we notice different details other people would miss.

Do you have plans to do any charity work with Sharks since you are a big fan of them? And animal protection in general?
I do have plans to do charity work, and definitely with animals! I grew up on a small farm and I’ve always had a giant spot in my heart for all wildlife. I would love to help in anyway I can and a charity of my own is my goal for the future.
