Johnny Depp

I love Johnny Depp simply because he does what he wants. He doesn't play by the rules and I'm glad he doesn't only those weird indie films anymore. I'm not surprised he does films like Pirates and Chocolate Factory. I'm sure he wants to do something his kids would enjoy watching and at the same time they're still quirky characters. But he does dress really weird. He looked like a pimp at the Golden Globes.

He has a whole bunch of non kiddie movies lined up, the Rum Diary and the Diving Bell and the Butterfly are indies, and Shantaram while probably isn't going to be an indie, its going to be produced by his production company so I hardly call that selling out. He bought the rights to Shantaram and wants to make it. He started doing Pirates soley for his kids, he didn't even read the script for it, hell his agent tried to talk him out of it. But he fell in love with the character, I don't consider that selling out.

I'm reminiscing here....

I have met and bumped into Johnny on occasions in the past and mostly they were in the Village. I was at Balducci's one night and I was stumped on an item. When I looked up there was Johnny *faints*. He had his baseball cap all the way down almost to his eyes, in black pea coat and jeans.... he gave a smile (i say it was a flirty smile) anyhoo, here comes Jennifer Grey out of nowhere , slipped her arm on his and was all over him ...kissing him:angry: ... I gave a look of disappointment, he looked back like this -->

*i guess i remembered more at Balducci's because it was the only time we locked eyes for what felt like eternity... and if Jen-face-changed-completely-Grey wasn't there, oh the thought of what could've been. *sighs*

damn Jen Grey

that was one.. the others were chance encounters *faints*

^Jennifer Gray, that must have been like forever ago! :D you have to share your other encounters! :D

But that's not only about non-kiddie films , I mean , since he became Vanessa's boyfriend (that does sound weird and I'm not implying anything ) he made one sh*tty big film after another, I can't think of one film in 8 years where he's been great , from 'The Astronaut's Wife' (oh-my-God) to 'From Hell' (the horror) , 'Blow' , 'Finding Neverland' , 'Charlie and blablabla', 'The Ninth Gate'.Indie films are not only about not being produced by a major it also has to involve a certain individuality, a certain originality script-wise or in the directing which doesn't stick to the usual hollywoodian movie. It's more the fact that he tries to play the 'rebel' the 'anti-hollywood' actor that annoys me considering the big films he plays in.He could have that kind of attitude in the past when he played in original indie films but not anymore , it sounds ridiculous, it's like he's playing the 'role' of the rebel.

I don't know what versions of Blow or Neverland you saw but the ones I saw were fantastic films and Johnny was superb in them. In fact I consider Blow to be one of his great performances. The other movies you mentioned werent great at all but that does not reflect his relationship with Vanessa, he made crappy movies before he met her too.

I stated before that I wasn't implying that Vanessa had something to do with it .I don't agree with you concerning 'Blow' or 'Neverland' but nevermind , to each their own taste. He did a few (maybe two or three) films which weren't that great before when he started as an actor , but for a certain time before he met Vanessa his choice of films was quite interesting and original , 'Arizona Dream', his performance in 'Edward scissorhands' 'Ed Wood' (along with 'Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas') were his best ones I guess , 'Dead Man' , 'Don Juan De Marco' ' Donnie Brasco' were fine films (though I'm not exactly a real fan of them) and his role and performance in them were good .'The Brave' was not exactly a great film but I guess I sort of appreciated his integrity , his dedication and he was fine all in all.'What's Eating Gilbert Grape' was ok though the main star was Leonardo di Caprio and he didn't have a significant role in it ,I also liked him in 'Cry Baby' . I just think that he used to play roles which were more risky and original in the past.

 :p .. goodness, am i giving my age away?  :innocent:  i was fairly young, a Manhattan teen. Friends say I was the start of his fixation to cute, adorable, sexy starlets like Winona, Kate and Vanessa  , frankly my dears I totally agree. *sighs*

Other encounters were at bars/club and parties. Johnny had a restaurant on Union Square called Man Ray. *sighs* .....

Sure, maybe some of the roles aren't risky but the way he chooses to portray the characters are...Sleepy Hollow, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Chocolat, Pirates of the Caribbean...its not the role but how the actor makes it his own and Johnny owns his roles, that is a mark of a great actor through time.

well said, johnny is the BEST actor living imo :flower:  and the best looking too.

^ I 2nd that! He's the most underrated actor, although he's gotten his fair share of recognition in Hollywood since "Pirates of the Caribbean" and the movie he starred with Kate Winslet. B)

^gosh i cant agree with you MORE! everything started going uphill from his oscar nod in pirates.

Johnny is an amazing actor! :) He's definitly my favourite actor, and watching him and my favourite actress Kate Winslet on screen together was just brilliant, people can say what they want but as a big fan I have no complaints about the movies he's doing! He may do a few kiddie movies, but you can't really say he does the same sh*t over and over which is what I love about him :)
