As far as I know, she's the lead singer of Sunflower Bean

Hedi Slimane’s obsession with rock ’n’ roll is well-documented, and the people he chooses to front his campaigns, from models to cultural icons like Joni Mitchell and B.B. King, all share his love. The latest face to be front and center for Saint Laurent is Julia Cumming, a model who splits her time between appearing on Slimane’s runway and playing in her band, Sunflower Bean. For Cumming, music is everything. “Music is my whole life,” she says. “Growing up, I remember wanting to be in the Beatles, constantly listening and soaking up whatever my parents gave me. It totally shaped me into who I am today, and what I listen to defines my world.

NOW LIVES In a four-bedroom loft in Bushwick, Brooklyn, with her bandmates in the psychedelic rock group Sunflower Bean.

CLAIM TO FAME Ms. Cumming is the bassist and a vocalist for Sunflower Bean, a teenage trio of hard-rock devotees, and a former member of the young indie-pop band Supercute! Ms. Cumming, who is 5-foot-11, is also a fashion model featured in the spring-summer 2015 ad campaign for Saint Laurent.

BIG BREAK After studying classical singing at the Professional Performing Arts School in New York, she had planned to enroll in a music conservatory for college. But her plans changed last year when a casting director for Saint Laurent discovered Sunflower Bean online and invited Ms. Cumming to walk in its fall-winter 2014 runway show. “As with everything in the fashion world, it happened very quickly and it seemed really insane,” she said. “Three weeks later, I was walking in their show in Paris. It was really special and supersurreal.” Ms. Cumming has since walked in three more shows for Saint Laurent.

LATEST PROJECT Sunflower Bean, which formed in 2013, released its debut EP, “Show Me Your Seven Secrets,” in January. It is a seamless amalgam of torpid heavy rock, icy New Wave vocals and noodling jam instrumentalism, and it faithfully reflects the band’s classic rock influences. “We’re all big Black Sabbath fans, especially in a live show,” Ms. Cumming said. “We’re trying to get a bit of the Who’s rhythm section and a little Pink Floyd-y guitar and have it be something really different.”

NEXT THING Sunflower Bean is recording its first full album, which it hopes to release this summer. “It’s going to be really melodic and cool,” she said. “The lyrics are personal to us and what we’re up to, like growing up and having a relationship with your family when you’re a weirdo.” The band also performed at South by Southwest as part of a national tour.

KID ROCKER “When I was a really little kid, my parents had a VHS tape called ‘Glam Rock.’ It was about 15 songs of Gary Glitter, T.Rex and Alice Cooper, and I watched it every day until it broke,” Ms. Cumming said. “I was in a Gary Glitter cover band in high school called Terry Tinsel.”
