VOGUE.COM: Herzlichen Glückwunsch Julia, Sie wurden auch 2008 zum VOGUE.COM Model des Jahres gewählt. Wussten Sie, dass Ihre Fangemeinde im Internet so groß ist? Julia Stegner: Bei der Wahl im letzten Jahr habe ich es natürlich schon mitbekommen. Außerdem haben mir Freunde erzählt, dass es einige Foren über mich gibt. Das Internet wird ja immer größer und ist eine perfekte Plattform, um Informationen und Bilder auszutauschen. VOGUE.COM: Wie finden Sie es, dass hunderttausende Seiten über Sie existieren? Julia Stegner: Eure Seiten zum Beispiel finde ich sehr schön. Insgesamt muss ich aber sagen, bin ich gar nicht so ein großer Internetfreak. Forenbeiträge versuche ich gar nicht erst zu lesen. Man ist natürlich bei netten Kommentaren geschmeichelt und oft überrascht, wie viel die Leute über einen wissen - aber es sind natürlich nicht immer nur positive Beiträge. Manchmal ist es besser für die eigene Psyche, wenn man sich das nicht antut. VOGUE.COM: Werden Sie häufig auf der Straße erkannt? Julia Stegner: Natürlich kommt es ab und zu vor, dass ich um ein Autogramm gebeten werde. Das ist schmeichelhaft, aber nach wie vor ein komisches Gefühl. Doch der Rummel hält sich einigermaßen in Grenzen, auch in New York, wo ich lebe. Dort sind es entweder deutsche Touristen oder Fashion Victims, die mich erkennen. Aber ich bin ja auch ein sehr privater Mensch und deshalb nur selten in der Presse. Außerdem sind Models heute generell nicht mehr so bekannt wie früher. VOGUE.COM: Empfinden Sie das als Vorteil? Julia Stegner: Teils, teils. Ich persönlich bin ganz froh darüber, dass die Zeit der Supermodels vorbei ist, da mir mein Privatleben sehr wichtig ist. Die Mädchen damals waren Ikonen, die jeder sehen wollte und auf keiner Party fehlen durften. Zu der Zeit gab es noch keine glamourösen Schauspielerinnen. Der Nachteil heute ist aber, dass Hollywood-Stars zunehmend die Rolle der Models übernehmen und sie auf Covern und in Kampagnen ersetzen. Deshalb sind Models einfach nicht mehr so populär, Namen wie Daria Werbowy, Lara Stone oder meinen Namen kennen nur noch Insider. VOGUE.COM: Was müsste sich Ihrer Meinung nach ändern? Julia Stegner: Ich fände es schön, wenn wir Models wieder mehr auf Covern präsent wären. Und wenn nicht jede Fußballerfrau in den Medien gleich als Topmodel bezeichnet würde, nur weil sie von einer Party zur nächsten hüpft. Schade ist nämlich, dass dann wiederum Bilder von guten Models ganz ohne oder mit falschem Namen abgedruckt werden. Über uns, die hart arbeiten, wird gerne mal hinweg geschaut. VOGUE.COM: Die Arbeit von Topmodels wird nicht genug gewertschätzt? Julia Stegner: Ich will mich überhaupt nicht beschweren. Ich weiß, wie viel Glück ich habe, den Job ausüben zu können. Aber auf der anderen Seite: Es ist harte Arbeit – und das wird in der Öffentlichkeit oft nicht wahrgenommen. Viele denken, unser Leben bestünde nur aus Glamour, und außer ein paar Mal in die Kamera zu lächeln, hätten wir nichts zu tun. Natürlich sind wir hochbezahlt, aber schließlich können wir den Job auch nicht lange machen. Ich muss jetzt eine Basis schaffen, um später das machen zu können, was ich will. VOGUE.COM: Gibt es schon konkrete Pläne? Julia Stegner: Ich will BWL, Geschichte oder Archäologie studieren. Das würde ich gerne bald parallel zum Modeln anfangen, wenn es die Zeit zulässt - aber das wird wahrscheinlich schwierig. Ich hatte mich in New York mal für Französisch eingeschrieben, konnte aber nur zwei Mal teilnehmen, weil ich immer unterwegs war. Ich habe die Schule immer gemocht, das Lernen fehlt mir ein bisschen. VOGUE.COM: Sie sind eines der wenigen Models, das seinen Schulabschluss beendet hat, nachdem es entdeckt wurde… Julia Stegner: Diesen Tipp würde ich jedem Mädchen geben, das ins Modelgeschäft einsteigen will: Mach die Schule fertig! Es ist ein kurzlebiges Geschäft, die Karriere kann von heute auf morgen zu Ende sein. Dass ich nach sechs Jahren immer noch dabei bin, hat auch etwas mit Glück und dem richtigen Zeitpunkt zu tun. Irgendwann brannte es bei mir etwas und alle haben mich angefragt – sonst hätte ich noch mein Fachabitur gemacht. Dann müsste ich mich jetzt zumindest nicht darum kümmern, ob man sich in den USA überhaupt mit Realschulabschluss einschreiben kann… VOGUE.COM: Haben Sie noch mehr Tipps parat? Zum Beispiel einen Beauty-Trick? Julia Stegner: Von uns wird erwartet, dass wir immer perfekt aussehen. Das ist bei mir gerade nicht der Fall: Ich habe die letzten Tage wenig geschlafen und sehe total müde aus. Ausreichend Schlaf ist das Wichtigste, aber der ist oft schwer zu kriegen. Und viel trinken – aber auch da halte ich mich nicht immer dran. Ich nehme es mir zwar vor, aber ich vergesse es einfach so leicht und bin manchmal auch zu faul, ständig zur Toilette zu rennen … Aber wenn ich wirklich am Tag meine drei Liter Wasser trinke, dann ist nicht nur meine Haut schöner, ich fühle mich auch insgesamt besser. VOGUE.COM: Was sind Ihre Tipps in Sachen Mode: Was ist aktuell Ihr Lieblingsstück und auf welchen Trend freuen Sie sich im nächsten Frühjahr? Julia Stegner: Ich bin ein echtes Fashion Victim, das ist durch die Arbeit natürlich noch viel extremer geworden. Gerade habe ich mir eine zottelige Fellweste von Helmut Lang gekauft, die ich ziemlich cool finde. Im nächsten Jahr kommt auf jeden Fall viel Farbe. Es ist toll, ab und zu ein bisschen Farbe zu kombinieren – obwohl ehrlich gesagt Schwarz und Weiß in meinem Kleiderschrank dominieren. Zum grauen Winter passt das auch besser. Aber das Frühjahr wird bunt. VOGUE.COM: Ihr Freund Steven Pan ist Modefotograf und hat Sie auch schon beruflich fotografiert. Wie war das für Sie? Julia Stegner: Bei einem der beiden Shootings haben wir als Stylisten und Make-up-Artisten einige unserer Freunde zusammengetrommelt, mit denen wir gerne arbeiten. Ich habe mich dabei unglaublich frei gefühlt, weil man alle kennt und mag und so leichter seine Meinung sagen kann. Was natürlich für ihn nicht nur von Vorteil war: Eigentlich ist er ja der kreative Kopf und ich hätte mich vielleicht mehr zurückhalten sollen… Aber ich war überrascht, wie harmonisch es war. Ich hatte befürchtet, dass wir uns vielleicht in die Haare kriegen. Ich mag auf jeden Fall seine Bilder und seine Art zu arbeiten sehr gerne – und das sage ich nicht nur, weil er mein Freund ist. Schließlich hat er als Assistent von Steven Meisel den besten Lehrer. VOGUE.COM: Er hat ja auch im letzten Jahr Ietzten Jahr Ihre Reise nach Sierre Leone für das Unicef-Projekt Child Survival begleitet und dokumentiert. Julia Stegner: Ja, das war sehr gut, dass er dabei war. Wir haben das damals mit VOGUE zusammen gemacht, die Bilder wurden nur dort abgedruckt. Vielleicht wäre es noch öffentlichkeitswirksamer gewesen, mit Kamerateam zu reisen, aber mir war es so lieber: Was ich nämlich nicht mag, sind Prominente, die Charity als Eigenwerbung verstehen. Diesen Eindruck wollte ich vermeiden. Mir ging es wirklich um die Kinder und darum, Unicef zu unterstützen. Ich bewundere ihre Arbeit sehr. What was this like for you? Julia Stegner: We as stylists and make-up artistes have the two photo shooting drummed together some of our friends with whom we like to work at one. The girls at that time were icons, that one of everybody wanted to see and on no party were allowed to be missing. There were no glamorous actresses at the moment yet. It is the disadvantage today, however, that Hollywood stars increasingly take on the role of the models and they replace on covering and in campaigns. Therefore models are simply no longer so popular, names like Daria Werbowy, Lara Stone or my name only know insiders. VOGUE.COM: What would have to change in your opinion? Julia Stegner: I would find it nice if more would be present us models on covering again. And if every footballer woman would not be described as a top model in the media at once only because she hops from a party to the next one. Then in turn pictures of good models are namely a pity that without whole or be printed with a false name. You like to look away over us these hard work. VOGUE.COM: The work of top models does not become enough gewertschätzt? Julia Stegner: I do not want to complain at all. I know how much I am lucky to be able to perform the job. But on the other side: It is hard work, and this is not often perceived in public. Many think only our life would insist to smile from glamour and apart from a few times into the camera had we to do nothing. Of course we are highly paid but we finally can not make the job for a long time either. I must create a base now to be able to do later what I want. VOGUE.COM: Are there already concrete plans? Julia Stegner: I want to study business administration, story or archaeology. Soon, I would this like to begin modelling parallel to it if it allows the time, this probably gets difficult, however. I had enrolled for French in New York once, however, could take part only two times because I was always away. Has the school always liked, I I lack studying a bit. VOGUE.COM: You are one of the few models which has ended its school-leaving qualification, after it was discovered. Julia Stegner: I would give this tip to every girl who wants to get in to the model business: Finish the school! It is a shortlived business, the career can be sudden. I still take part after six years, something also has to do with luck and the right time that. Sometime, burned it with me a little and everyone has made an inquiry about me, I still would have taken my special abitur otherwise. I then should not take care at least, whether now one can enroll at all with high-school diploma in the USA. VOGUE.COM: Do you have still more tips readily? For example a beauty trick? Julia Stegner: It is expected us by us to look perfect always. At all, this is not the case with me: I have slept little the last days and look extremely tired. Pass-mark sleep is the most important but this one has to be often got heavily. And many drink, I, however, do not always hold on to it also there. I intend but I simply forget so easily and sometimes am too badly, permanently, too to the toilet to run. But if I really drink my three litres of water on the day, then not only my skin is more beautiful, I feel better also altogether. VOGUE.COM: Your tips are what in the area of fashion: What is your favourite play currently and to which trend you look forward next spring? Julia Stegner: I am a genuine Fashion Victim, of course this has got even much more extreme by the work. I have just bought a shaggy fur waistcoat of Helmut Lang for me which I find rather cool. Next year, in any case a lot of colour comes. It is terrific to combine a little colour from time to time, dominate black and white in my wardrobe although said honestly. This matches the grey winter also better. But the spring gets coloured. VOGUE.COM: Your friend Steven Pan is fashion photographer and has already taken a photograph of you professionally, too. What was this like for you? Julia Stegner: We as stylists and make-up artistes have the two photo shooting drummed together some of our friends with whom we like to work at one. I have felt unbelievably free because one knows everyone and likes and can tell his opinion so more easily. What of course for him only of advantage was not? Actually he is the creative head and I would have been supposed to hold back perhaps more. But I was surprised how harmonious it was. I had feared that we get each other perhaps into the hair. In any case I like its pictures and his way to work, and I do not only say this because he is my friend. He finally has the best teacher as an assistant of Steven Meisel. VOGUE.COM: He has year accompanied and documented your journey to Sierre Leone also in the last year last one for the Unicef project Child Survival. Julia Stegner: Yes, this was very good that he took part. We have done this at that time together with VOGUE, the pictures were printed only there. Perhaps it would have been even more public effective to travel with camera crew but it was so dearer to me: What I do not like namely are socialites who understand Charity as a self-promotion. I wanted to avoid this impression. It really was for me, to support Unicef all about the children and all about it. I admire their work very much. Julia dreams about being a mother and stupid online articles say that Steven prefers to be in Berlin and they even talk about controversies because Julia wants to have a house and childen in Munich but I'm sure they didn't get something about trouble in their relation ship from Julia because if they would exist she would not talk about them in the media.
