Interview - Julija Steponaviciute (Baltic Model MGMT)
When revelation of beauty and desire for chocolate cause to happen a big change in life, it can only be one thing that is explicable as fate. When you book a Gucci show at the age of 14, shoot a Vogue Italia editorial and walk for Calvin Klein and Dolce Gabbana one year later it’s obviously more than just "being at the proper time at the proper place” and truly the result of ambition, talent and great timing as well as stand-out management starting from Lithuania’s top agency ‘Baltic Model Management’. As such, we’re sure that this was just the beginning of everything. Thank you very much for taking the time, Juliya!

How did you start modeling? Did it ever cross your mind before?
I was scouted back home in Vilnius, Lithuania while buying chocolate in the city centre. Ironic , isn’t it? Chocolate helped me to come into the modeling world. No , I never thought about it before. Well…thirteen years old. Guess I was just too young.
You're still going to school, right? How does that work to combine modeling with school?
Right. I still chew books. It is hard to combine these two completely different things in life, but, guess what, I’m trying and it works!
Your first big runway show was for Gucci in 2008!
That happened during my first trip to Milan. To tell the truth, I was so “raw” in this fashion business that I didn’t even realize how important the show was. Though it wasn’t until later, as I got to Rome where the show took place. Just then I admitted being that little bird between all eagles. Between all the supermodels.

Is there a typical mistake that new faces tend to do on their first casting?
Hmm. Being too shy, maybe. On the other hand if it’s the first casting- how much can you expect?
How do you like New York? Is it difficult for you to find your way in cities you didn't know before or do you get along well with it from the beginning on?
I <3 style="color: rgb(153, 51, 153);">I am very good at maps. So there are no problems for me to go around the city even if I’m new in certain place. Especially New York- planning of the city is just so simple. You can’t get lost.
A great number of people compares your beauty to Ieva Laguna's one, who's also a successful newcomer from the Baltics. Apart from her, do people compare you to any other model?
I’ve heard and have seen people comparing me with Kasia Struss and Aline Weber as well. But I don’t think I look that similar to them. Do I?

How do you feel about people giving you compliments about your look & work?
Compliments always pat one’s heart. I feel good when people give compliments about my look and/or work if they have strong arguments why they think so. I can’t stand if they do not have their own opinion. People have to think of themselves!
Do you think that a model can only be successful when she's backed by a top agency?
I don’t think model can only be successful if represented by major agency. But then, of course, agency means a lot!
You walked 22 (?) shows including Calvin Klein, Marc Jacobs, Bottega Veneta and Dolce & Gabbana this season. It's possible, but actually sorts of unlikely for a new face to book such a selective amount of high end shows. What do you think is the reason for your success?
So you want to hear the “magic formula”? But there is none. I don’t really know what pushed them to book me for those shows. If you would like to hear the truth, you should ask designers themselves. Maybe they saw something special that I do have.
You have this amazing story photographed by Deborah Turbeville in the current issue of Vogue Italia. Where was it photographed and what was it like to work with her?
The “Variations on chic” story for October’s issue of Vogue Italia was photographed in Rome, Villa Medici. It was truly fascinating, but what else could we expect from the city which lies in the place of Ancient Empire.
Deborah Turbeville is a person, who only makes her best. She knows what she wants, she knows how models, light and all smallest details have to look like. One word - professional.

Is posing infront of a camera together with various girls actually more difficult than so called "only girl/one girl" editorials?
If compared posing in “one girl” editorials and posing with various girls, each has it’s minuses and pluses .It depends on many conditions: what kind of story is it, where the shooting takes place and especially who you are working with.
What was the first thing you did after getting home from fashion week in September?
I slept as much as I wanted, made a teapot with my favorite tea, turned on good music and painted. That’s what I call home. Home sweet home.
