(NEW YORK) Nothing banishes the mid-week doldrums like a killer downtown double-billing. Interview magazine had just the thing Wednesday night, hosting a packed show at The Annex featuring The Citizens Band performing back-to-back with The Fiery Furnaces. Coyly radical as ever, the cabaret collective, which included Karen Elson, Sarah Sophie Flicker, Ian Buchanan, and Angela McCluskey, kicked off its set with a song entitled “Gasoline” and ended by launching a volley of manifestos urging the audience to vote on November 7. “I’m English, so I can’t vote,” singing supe Elson explained. “We’re trying to be positive and not dogmatic, but it’d be wonderful to see everybody else do it.” Not that the politics weren’t served up with a healthy dose of style. “Kiki de Montparnasse, all of it,” Elson grinned with a flourishy gesture at her ostrich-plumed hat and satiny costume before being whisked away by Stefano Pilati and an avalanche of air-kisses.

However, though each of them is a present supermodel, at the forefront of the world of fashion, rumors have abounded that their careers are coming to a close. Now, current top model Karen Elson says she’s set to record her CD debut.

Being a model is business. Being a musician is a dream.
This is Karen Elson, who has done a seductive nude ad for Yves Saint Laurent Opium perfume, among many other such campaigns. With her pure white, porcelain-like skin and red hair, she has maintained top standing among models for some time. Though she is quite a normal girl outside of work, when it’s time to shoot, she is quick with come-hither facial expressions that have garnered her legions of male fans.
"To me, fashion is something I love. But above that, modeling has become a job to me, and a fun job at that.
The smooth-talking Karen has had an unfulfilled dream. Singing is that dream, and, unbeknownst to most, she has been resolutely taking her first steps into becoming a singer for almost the past year now. The ones who inspired this decision were James Iha and Melissa from the Smashing Pumpkins. She met them through a mutual friend and hit it off easily. In the course of visiting each other’s houses, she was asked if she would like to try singing, with songwriting, lyric writing, and band performance in mind. She laughed, saying, “Well if you’re being serious, I’ve been in love with the idea of being a musician for a long time, but unfortunately modeling is what’s put me on the map.”
She had no formal training on any musical instrument. But, through playing with instruments like a child and experimenting, “it became quite natural for me to play music” As for right now, she’s writing songs on guitar and on Autoharp, a zither-like instrument used by Johnny Cash and others. She tapes herself, and lays words on top of the music, a verse at a time. In addition, she says she wants to add bass and percussion to her repertoire of songwriting tools. “It’s nothing big, like composition, but I’m really having fun and getting immersed in the beginnings of making my own music.”
And what about Karen’s songs? “Dark and slow, and sleepy. Very melancholy stuff. I guess it’s like everyone wears two different masks, huh? When modeling, I’m happy and cheerful, but in music, it’s like I pull out a dark mask.”
She says that advice from James and Melissa is to thank for much of that style.
“In particular, James understands the kind of music I like, and his songs are really easy to sing. The current climate in the music world seems to call for songs with more of a happy mood, but I’m going with dark and slow stuff.”
Manchester, England, where Karen was born and raised, became famous in the 80s with bands like the Happy Mondays and the Stone Roses, who mixed punk, rock, and folk into a sound became known as the Manchester Movement sound. Because her older brother knew one of the members of the Happy Mondays well, she always heard their music as a child.
“Because of this, I guess it was natural for me to become a musician,” she says.
Karen found herself listening to the music she loved at the time. Neil Young, Nico, NickCave.
“Some CDs I really love are Neil Young’s Decade, Secret Machine’s Now Is Nowhere, and Bluebell Knoll, by the Cocteau Twins. I HATED pop music back then. But since I’ve become a musician, I’ve come to realize how tough it is to write music and sing. I think musicians deserve a lot of respect, no matter what genre they play.”
Karen is now right in the middle of working on her debut CD. Aside from self-compositions, she says that James has written a lot of songs for her. "I’m hoping to get a sense of satisfaction, and to hear from people that it really is a good CD upon its debut. So I don’t mind even if it takes some time to finish." But Karen also has other priorities. "Even when the CD is out, I’m not gonna quit modeling. Fashion is my true calling, after all."
