Check out Franklin Road’s very own Karen Elson on the cover of this month’s British Vogue.

I’ve been following Karen’s career since she arrived from Europe (she’s a native Brit) on these shores in the late ’90s; I remember the buzz around her big editorial break - the cover of Italian Vogue she shot for Steven Meisel that he convinced her to shave her eyebrows for in 1997 - and seeing her on runways all over the world when I was covering fashion for the Post. I’ve even interviewed her a few times over the years, backstage at shows; we have mutual friends from our days in New York, as well.

All this came up a few weeks ago when Karen delighted me by stopping by a small vintage sale I had at my house.

She’s just a darling girl: sweet, considerate and not at all pretentious or Do-you-know-who-I-am? She introduced herself to everyone else there and kept apologizing to everyone for taking the good stuff! She has excellent taste, as you might expect, being privy to so many clothes and stylish folks via her job. That said, I think 95 percent of her style is innate: she’s got a really wonderful flair for bringing ’30s-era pinup-y silhouettes into the Now (read:she wears vintage without it looking like I’m Wearing Vintage, which isn’t necessarily easy).

All that to say she’s as nice as she is stylish.

One thing I didn’t tell her - for some reason, it’s not the kind of thing that seems appropriate when someone is packing hoards of old dresses into garbage bags in your driveway - was that I think that she looks better now that she ever has.

I mean, look at this shot: she’s literally glowing! And I can tell you, it ain’t just clever lighting: she does it in person, too.

And while I don’t know this for sure, I can only harbor a guess that this aura of peace and benevolence must be due to the love of a good man (one Mr. Jack White) and a happy home filled with two beloved kiddies.

Oh - and the sweet life we all have here living in Nashville, of course.

So, thanks Karen - not only for taking so many things off my hands at my sale (look for some to surface at the vintage store she’s opening on Belmont Blvd with Amy Patterson next month!), but for making Nashville a more beautiful place with your presence.

Karen joined She and Him on stage in Nashville the other night to perform the Tennessee Waltz. Her voice is stunning.

With only 3 more months until the Presidential Election, we are thrilled to announce a re-staging of our musical extravaganza “The Panic Is On.” We shall be performing a very special 3 night run at the marvelous traveling Spiegletent in lower Manhattan.
