NW's first - ever Supermodel
When it comes to turning out supermodels New Zealand has an appalling success rate. In fact, if you really want to tally up the number of supermodels we’ve produced so far in round figures it would be – well, none actually. Rachel Hunter and Kylie Bax have both made a name for themselves as voluptuous and strapping sex bomb types, but when it comes to the world of Vogue covers and catwalk couture we’ve never produced anyone to rival say, Australia’s darling Gemma Ward.
Well, all that is about to change. Meet Katie Braatvedt – the girl we’re tipping to be the first-ever true New Zealand supermodel. 14-year-old Katie hails from Devonport and is a schoolgirl at Takapuna Grammar. She’s also about to appear in a 10 page Australian Vogue editorial (the first New Zealand girl to appear in Vogue in nearly a decade) and is hotly tipped to be one of the new faces on the runway for the Prada and Miu Miu shows in Milan next September.
Being placed on hold for an exclusive with Prada and Miu Miu is particularly significant for a model. Prada pride themselves on discovering the next big thing and Gemma Ward launched her careeer in an exclusive appearance on the runway for both labels back in 2003.
Braatvedt was discovered in New Zealand by Lisa Williams, head of new up-and-coming Auckland agency Vanity Walk. A 14page shoot in Pavement magazine gave the young model a portfolio and Williams theny signed her via Michael Hooker's agency MHI with international hotshop IMG in Paris and New York.
