Kit Willow: Eco Warrior—The Aussie Designer Returns With an Ethically Conscious Collection
Nicole Phelps March 6, 2015
Losing your business and the right to your name is a nightmare scenario for a designer. It happened to Kit Willow, an Australian who was making inroads on the international fashion scene. She took a year off to be at home with her young kids and research a different kind of clothing concept, and she’s in Paris this week presenting it to buyers. “From hell to heaven in 12 months,” is how she put the whole experience in an e-mail invitation to see the new collection. KITX, as she’s named the line, is an eco-conscious and artisanally minded effort, with, she promises, none of the hippie, “crunchy” vibe that usually defines such projects. Willow has made a point of sourcing cotton, wool, silk, hemp, and even Tencel fabrics that harm the environment as little as possible. Her cotton, for example, is organic; the plants produce their own seeds at the end of their life cycle so Willow doesn’t have to go knocking on bioengineering companies’ doors. But lofty aims only go so far. The clothes have to be desirable, so beyond the handwoven touches on many of the pieces, she has injected others with the corsetry lacing details that gave her original collection its edge. Who would have believed a dress made with such kind intentions could actually look this good?
