I always have an issue with his work because it's so forced to be something other than what he is. It is not original, it's soaked in Tom Ford at Gucci era influence; which we all know is unavoidably influential to an extent.
But, let's remember- this is someone who learned garment construction by taking things apart and putting them back together. His own words, not mine. It's very easy to see that LaQuan, similar to Rhuigi; is part of this collective that gets by with copy+paste methods, not having any actual originality. The real modern day master of the copy+paste technique genius was Virgil and Virgil alone. We even see Pharrell doing some of the copy+paste influence method at Vuitton Men's but there is a higher level of taste and exposure to wider range influence in that regard.
LaQuan has never had an identifiably strong voice that felt true and original to him.
It always feels like the hemlines are too short, or the look is under developed.
Nothing he presented brings fashion forward, and it doesn't really take a meaningful look back either.
So it's just there, looking at us blankly. How does his stuff do at retail? Is he making good money with his collections?
