Meet the Dubbo-born girl who went from biology class to the Prada runway

The word “exclusive” is gold in the modelling world. It’s when a label finds a model so exquisite and unique that they have to secure her all for themselves. Prada has a knack for picking models, with many of their exclusives (like Vogue cover model Gemma Ward) becoming international names with successful careers.

With a pedigree like that, we’re betting that Lara Carter may just be the next big thing. She chats to Vogue exclusively moments after walking the Prada runway.

How did you get started in modelling?
“My brother plays basketball. He’s 6’4”, and one day my parents dragged me along to one of his basketball team’s barbeques where I was scouted by Priscillas. I went to Priscilla’s house the following weekend with my family to meet with her properly, and that’s when I signed with them.”

When did you first find out you were going to walk the Prada show in Milan?
“Monday morning! I was on a flight to Milan on Monday afternoon.” [The show took place Thursday evening.]

Prior to modelling, were you interested in fashion?
“Not really. I played a lot of sport when I was younger and never gave it much notice. I only bought my first pair of heels last month. Although now being surrounded by other models and the people who are creating these looks, my interest is growing. I am noticing what people are wearing around me more.”

How do your friends and family react to your career?
“Everyone in my life is very supportive and encouraging. The night I walked Prada, my phone didn’t stop vibrating from my friends at school congratulating me. Mum and Dad are very proud. They woke up at 4 am to watch the live stream.”

What have you been doing in Milan?
“I arrived the day of fittings, so I spent a lot of time at Prada. I have had the chance to taste the food of Italy though and yesterday I visited the Duomo.”
