AP - Law & Order star Jerry Orbach has died of prostate cancer at 69, a representative of the show has said.

Orbach died on Tuesday night in Manhattan after several weeks of treatment, Audrey Davis of the public relations agency Lippin Group said.

When his illness was diagnosed, he had begun production on NBC's upcoming spinoff Law & Order: Trial By Jury, after 12 seasons playing Detective Lennie Briscoe in the original series. His return to the new show had been expected early next year.

On Broadway, the Bronx-born Orbach starred in hit musicals including Carnival, Promises, Promises (for which he won a Tony Award), Chicago and 42nd Street.

Among his film appearances were roles in Dirty Dancing, Prince of the City and Crimes and Misdemeanors.

i like him...used to see him walking around town...just felt like i knew him...hmmm...

very sad...rip...

the lights on broadway were dimmed in his honour...he was from the bronx and starred in many broadway shows...

That's so sad - I love L&O, and his departure was sad enough, but to hear that he'll never play even a recurring role is just terrible as well...

RIP...

Remembering Jerry

I too saw him on Broadway many times. He was that unique New York acting phenomenon called a song and dance man. Beautiful voice, light on his feet, and a commanding stage presence. We don't see many great song and dance men any more, except in revivals, because the parts aren't written any more. Most TV viewers would never guess it, but Peter Gallagher of The OC is a great song and dance man. But Jerry Orbach was as much a part of New York as Sardi's and the Oyster Bar. His achievement in propping up NBC in its current hard times is a testament to his stature. A class act. He will not be forgotten.

promises

look for the soundtrack LP/CD to 'promises promises' 1968 broadway musical with orbach starring/singing all songs composed by burt bacharach/hal david.

I bought the vintage vinyl for $100 but the cd is like $20.

cool...some of our younger members might remember him as the voice of lumiere...

the singing french candlestick in beauty and the beast...:innocent:

He was the winningest celebrity ever on Jeopardy (TV quiz show). Talented AND smart . . . almost extinct in today's celebs. Go Jerry! Wooo!

 Law and Order is not the same w/out Lenny Brisco and I never knew he could sing and a musical actor on broadway. He will be missed.

I am very very sadden of his lost. L&O is my show and it is greatly dimmed without his light. I felt like I knew him.....
