Her fragile and delicate allure resembles that of a romantic character, and her walk is very aristocratic and elegant. Léa Seydoux is what she appears to be: a simple nice girl.

Her name is Léa, like the heroine of Régine Deforges’ “Blue Bicycle”. Seydoux an important last name in French cinema, a dynasty. However her talent and passion for acting is totally her own. Agnès in Molière’s “The School for Wives”, Grouchenka in the Karamazov Brothers or Nora in Ibsen’s “A Doll’s House”; Léa could be any role. There is no distinction between her soul and her outside appearance. The eye of the lens already reveals her presence as that of a great actress without ostentations nor false mimics, common characteristics of the actresses of her generation. Before the theatre it’s the movie world that opens its doors to her: she will play in Tarantino’s next movie “Inglorious Basterds”, and she will be Isabelle d’Angoulême in Ridley Scott’s movie.

How did you get chosen to star in Quentin Tarantino’s “Inglorious Basterds“?
I went to the casting for the role of the protagonist and that of Shosanna Dreyfus, then Tarantino explained to me that I couldn’t do it because of my looks and my age but that he really liked me, so he gave me part of young Shosanna in the first part of the movie. It’s a small role but the character is very interesting. We shot in an isolated farm in the French countryside. I play the part of one of the farmer’s three daughters. The story is set during World War II, Shosanna’s family gets killed by the Nazis.
How do you work on your characters?
Mainly intuition. I don’t follow a precise technique. Sometimes I don’t study at all. It depends on the character. I don’t prepare for each role the same way. If I don’t prepare for it at all it means that I know how to act it out by following my intuition. In general, I define the main traits with the director and then I paint my own palette of emotions like a painter. It depends on the character, some require a more intellectual preparation. Usually I am more intuitive. The minute we start shooting, I follow my instinct, I don’t think. I go for it.
How would you define your job?
I believe: being an actress is not a job. It’s a way a giving yourself to others. A belief. You have to be a narcissist to be an actor. Sometimes I get this funny feeling at the end of a movie, as if the character was still in me. For example if I played a very intellectual character, I go around thinking, asking myself questions. Then after a while I go back to normal.
